Canon MX870 HELP PLEASE

Just recently my wifi printer (canon PIXMA MX870) wouldn't work when it goes to sleep. I mean that when the display goes black it will not print and on the Mac it just pauses itself when i unpause it it repauses itself and won't print. Then i have to turn it off and on again (printer) and it will print fine. Please help. I haven't change ANY settings, i just replaced the PGI-Black INK and the cyan and yellow ink is "low". Any help will be VERY much appreciated.

Same problem here. I used the printer control panel to print the network config page, partly to see what it said and partly to just nudge the printer into action. It took forever, with enough whirring and grunting to make you think it was going to lay an egg, but eventually it kicked out the page and then after that a page that had been queued on my Mac and "auto-paused" finally went through without any further action from me.

I hope the owner of this thread will mark it Unanswered, as there are a lot of us that don't have it fixed. It doesn't seem to have to do with the drivers installed on the computer, since it is happening to someone on this thread using a Windows machine as well.

The MX870 seems to just go into a state where it reports a Paused state to the network. If Canon doesn't have a fix for this, I'm going to try to return mine and get an HP with AirPlay support.

I have the same problem using a 2008 iMac running 10.6.5 connecting to a Canon MX870 over wifi.
I have updated to the latest drivers 10.30.3.0, yet the printer does not show up in the default list when I try to add it. I am also unable to add it directly via ip address. I have rebooted everything multiple times, yet nothing works.
I am unable to see the printer via Bonjour browsing through Safari, yet I can browse to its admin page using its IP address over http.

It looks like something is preventing the printer from being seen over Bonjour.
I am also using an Airport Extreme Base station (802.11n).

I am successfully able to connect and print just fine to the printer from a Windows XP or Windows7 laptop over wifi.

How is this question "answered"? It looks like many people are having similar problems problems when connecting to a Mac.

Just off the phone with Canon support after two email inquiries with responses that demonstrated that they either didn't read my email, or didn't read the kb solution they sent out to me, since the two were pretty utterly unrelated. (Hello, Canon: can you say "Our customer support is damaging our brand?")

I'm skeptical of the phone rep's solution, but at least he seemed to understand the problem, so I'm giving it a try and will report back on success/failure.

1) He asked if I had a Blackberry, iPhone or Android. When I told him I did have an iPhone, he said that is likely the culprit. Presumably the other wifi-enabled mobiles also are being cited.

2) He said sometimes the phone will "disrupt" the wifi in some way he couldn't really explain.

3) The solution is supposed to be: pull power from your router, then from the printer, let both sit a minute, and re-power in no particular order. Yes, my eyes rolled as well.

4) Although he couldn't give me any theoretical basis for the idea that my phone won't just create the same problem again, he claims that people don't call back after this "fix." Canon thinks that's because it's so rare that one person won't be likely to have it twice. Hmmmm. I'll have to decide whether to bother to call back if it doesn't work, because my faith in Canon support is dwindling so quickly.

I'll post results soon if it fails again, or in a week or two if things are humming along ok.

The action and information from the 'Canon' support person reeks of incompetence and typical of many outsourced support companies - you're not actually talking to Canon techs, just call centre people pretending to be Canon. So it is not surprising to read that their steps did not work as it was a load of BS!

Given the increasing numbers of MX870 users experiencing the loss of the network connection and hence the pausing of the print queue then I suggest you or someone else starts a new post with the heading 'Canon MX870 Print Queue Pausing'. It's more appropriate than the original posting plus it can remain unsolved until someone actually does determine the cause.

In the meantime so suggestions.

1. Change the channel your wireless network is using and then reboot all wireless devices. They should then reconnect using the new channel being used.

2. If the device still causes the queue to pause then see if you can open the internal web page of the MX870. I would expect that if the issue is related to energy saver modes (sleep) then connecting to the internal web page should 'wake' the device.

3. Through the MX870 web page you can enable the LPR protocol and service notification. This will advertise the printer using Bonjour instead of the proprietary 'canonijnetwork' protocol. Add the new printer queue using this Bonjour printer and see if the same symptom persists.

Thanks, those are all suggestions that sound promising. I did wake the printer once by connecting to the internal page, but hopefully one of the other two might provide a more permanent solution.

I got the printer to work again after my last post, which fits with the intermittent nature of the issue. If it is reliable for a week or two I will post again. If it isn't I will probably follow your advice and open a new, "unanswered" thread.

To me, this is clearly a low-level crash of the Canon MX870's networking.

I have the same issue: my Canon MX870 is losing network connectivity on a regular basis, causing issues for everyone that uses the printer in the home.

HOWEVER, and this is big: my MX870 is not using WIFI. I have never used its WIFI. I am using the Canon's built-in wired ethernet port.

And so therefore I conclude that this problem isn't related to WIFI wireless channels or any other WIFI devices. It seems like a low-level crash of the networking inside the printer itself.

I have the same problem. I have removed and re-added several times. It usually fixes the problem for a few minutes but then the perma pause is back. This is very frustrating. The printer is brand new and is useless...

There was a new driver update that installed today via software update... maybe this will fix it?

Obviously everyone isn't having this problem as this printer has great reviews... Is it a hardware problem?

If not I want to return this to Apple (I got it with my Mac), but I doubt they will take it back.
