Canon MX870 HELP PLEASE

Just recently my wifi printer (canon PIXMA MX870) wouldn't work when it goes to sleep. I mean that when the display goes black it will not print and on the Mac it just pauses itself when i unpause it it repauses itself and won't print. Then i have to turn it off and on again (printer) and it will print fine. Please help. I haven't change ANY settings, i just replaced the PGI-Black INK and the cyan and yellow ink is "low". Any help will be VERY much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with my Canon MX870.

Starting a new print job and it says it's "Paused" - or something to that effect...

Deleting a adding the printer resolves the problem temporarily, but it eventually happens again. I have an ethernet connected MX870. This is a royal PITA with 5 Macs in my house and a wife and two school children that constantly need to print.

Here's what I did to get it fully working. Install the software that came with the printer, when it can't find the printer on the network just cancel. Now that the software is all installed, let's get the printer added to the Mac.

Okay, so what you want to do is go into Device Settings>LAN Settings>Other Settings>Bonjour settings>Enable/disable Bonour> Click Enable

At this point you can also go into Service name and change the name of the printer.

Then reboot the printer.

Go into System Preferences>Print & Fax on your Mac, unlock it if it's locked, and click on the + to add a printer. Now you should be in Add Printer. Click on Default if your not already there, give it a few seconds to locate the printer and the scanner. Select the printer and click Add. Now, if you want the scanner added as well, go back in and click on the +, select the scanner and click Add.

Now, unless there's some other network issue your printer should be fully functional.

Hi, I'm having issues printing wirelessly with my Canon MX870. I was finally able to print wirelessly by following your advice on another post re. first connecting via USB cable and entering the SSID and password. Thank you!!

I have been able to connect wirelessly and print wirelessly; but after a while, I'll receive a message "A communication error has occurred"; and when I open the printer utility, the network list is empty. Any ideas?

I have finally resolved the issues with my Canon MX870. After dragging the printer across town to the Canon repairer, and being told there was no problem with it, I called in an IT specialist. The problem was the security settings on my router; as soon as they were removed completely, I could add the printer immediately (and easily) from my macbook; the printer would print wirelessly and wake from sleep each time. The router has now been reconfigured with a slightly lower level of security; and it is working perfectly.

I had a similar problem. Was not sure whether the problem was with the printer, the wireless router, or my iMac. I called Cannon support. The solution was this: On the printer pick press setup button, then go to "device settings", then to "other settings", then to "bonjour settings". Disable bonjour and pick OK. Go to iMac and click on the apple symbol and pick "preferences" in the menu. Then click on "print and fax". Highlight the MX870 and click on the minus(-) symbol in the bottom left corner which will get rid of the printer and its bonjour setting. Next pick the add ➕ symbol in the bottom left corner and wait. It should show Canon MX870 series (00.1e.8f.97.04.b4). It is back to working fine. My problem arose when I did an software update from Apple specifically for this printer. I did not pay attention to the update but did think it was odd that Apple was updating something for a third party vendor. Anyway, the fix has to do with getting bonjour out of the equation to make things work properly. Your printer is OK, your router is OK and your computer is OK (mostly)...bonjour is the problem. Bonjour!

I also suspect that software update from Apple, as that's when my problems started with this printer. I tried your suggestion, but once I delete the Bonjour link I can no longer "see" the printer. I waited for 30 minutes (second time around) for the printer to show up in the Add Printer box, and it never did. It's there, because I can use ping to reach the printer's IP address. No luck connecting to it unless I use Bonjour, and then I'm back to the original problem. This is not solved, and I think there's problems on both ends of the connection.

Here is what I did. I've been having these problems since I bought my Canon MX870. It works for a while, then stops. At first I thought it was due to low ink, but found it happens randomly.

First, I when to Utilities/Airport Utility and found my Time Capsule software had an update available. I updated.

Second, I checked my Airport security settings. I noticed two variants of WPA2, one personal and one enterprise. I have no idea what this means so I left it as personal. Then I went to my printer and changed its setting to WPA2-PSK (AES) as described in a post above.

Finally, I took Apple's advice and reset my printer system in my printer control panel: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1253. I then added the printer using the "+". It took a few seconds, but found my printer and recognized it just fine over the WiFi network through my Time Capsule.

I recently upgraded to Lion which seemed to make the problem worse. It took a few minutes to do all of this, but it seemed to work! I can print again. Now, let's see if it passes the test of time ...

I found your suggestion of disabling Bonjour and deleting and adding the printer in Print & Scan System Preferences fixed this issue with my Canon MG5300 Series printer. It would pause itself midprint job. I would click to unpause it and it would often repause itself. Sometimes turning the printer on and off would help, as would deleting print jobs, but nothing really fixed it permantly. Thanks!

Not sure if anyone still reading this thread, but I had similar problems recently with my MX870. Followed this advice and nailed it:

Spent a couple of hours today making my Canon MX870 printer work.
The printer is connected to the LAN via Ethernet. No luck printing under OSX while Windows 7 and 8 were perfectly fine.
It turned out that default Bonjour name of the printer needs to be shortened via Printer’s native menu.

  1. Point to http://IPofThePrinter/. You can get the IP from the router’s DHCP table
  2. Click Advanced
  3. Click Other Settings
  4. Under Bonjour settings change Service name to something short, mine is MX870
  5. Click OK at the top of the page
  6. Go back to your Mac, open Preferences
  7. Click Print and Scan
  8. Remove the printer by pressing “-” button
  9. Add the printer and scanner again by clicking “+” button
  10. Enjoy!
