I think the next test would be to create a test library on the external and heck it's performance. But I do suspect thatyou'll be rebuilding. This kind if thing:
I actually secure-erased my 10.6.8 HDD before upgrading to Mavericks. I restored 10.6.8 back to the HDD before downloading and installing Mavericks though.
frequently causes these kinds of problems.
Ok. Did two more tests:
1) Had another (different) external HD that had a copy of my main library on it - the big one. Same exact issues (quick to quit if nothing has changed, minutes to quit if anything changes).
2) Created a new 4GB library on that same external HD, and just like my test on the local OS SSD, it was super fast and quit instantaneously regardless of whether items changed in the library or not.
You are probably right about the reformat in-between 10.6.8 and Mavericks causing problems. It seems that master library that has followed me through the upgrade process is just not quite right any more, so I will go ahead and do a IPLM rebuild of it and hope that resolves the issue. If it doesn't, then maybe the new iPhoto and/or Mavericks just generally chokes on database updates when there are so many photos?
Thanks Terence.
I finally did the fresh rebuilding using IPLM. After opening and closing it a couple times before benchmarking, the same problem remains.
Open, browse photos, but don't change anything = super fast quit operation - instantaneous.
Open, move 1 photo to trash = takes over 1 minute to close, spinning and spinning, taking up over 200% CPU.
Any other ideas?
it worked for me. u saved my day!
wait, u saved my life 😁
Yes.
I have the same problem. I am new to iPhoto 11; have Version 10.9.5. I am on an iMac Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3, Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, with 1.73 TB available capacity. I tried the suggestion to close and then reinstall the Facebook account under iPhoto Preferences, but that did not work. In general, iPhoto is extraordinarily slow. I suspect that there may be a correlation with the fact that I just started taking photos in RAW as well as jpeg format, so I have huge files in each of my new iPhoto Buddy libraries. I did not have this uploading/slowness problem with my earlier version 9 of iPhoto. I simply can no longer upload to Facebook using the "Share" button on the lower right of my iPhoto screen. Note that I use iPhoto Buddy, Version 1.3.8 to manage my libraries. I have been using that for a long time because I upload lots of my iPhoto albums to Flickr. I have lost my Flickr albums - and Facebook - albums in the past (they disappeared and were replaced by question marks) - when I made changes to my iPhoto Buddy libraries, so I will not do that again.
Please HELP!!! Any advice would be appreciated.

iPhoto Buddy is pointless, it does nothing that iPhoto doesn't do anyway.
The Raw files should make no difference.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result.
Thanks this helped.
