My Ipod Touch 8GB 3rd generation is not charging or connecting to ITunes when I put it in the USB port. How can I fix this? Thanks.

Both my daughter and I had the same problem in the last 24 hrs. She plugged her itouch to charge, when she woke up it was completely dead and won't charge. We can't even get the battery icon to show up. Mine did the same thing that night. Both of us did update or OS to 4.2 about 2-3 days ago. She has a 3rd gen, I have the 2nd gen. Seems like Apple has an issue at hand and they need to make it right.

I solved the problem on my 2nd gen iPod touch. This document explains it: "iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore" ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808). You have to do a "recovery." This is different from a "restore" and isn't in the owners manual. The key step is:

"While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB cable to iPhone, the device should power on....Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button."

Hi guys,

I just bought a new ipod touch 64gb 4gb 1.5 months ago.
Yesterday I drained the battery till it's empty I guess.

Now my ipod touch is not charging, it even cant be detected in the itunes.
*The only thing I get is the red-low battery image, with lighting image underneath it.*

*Supposedly it should lighting image with a cable image if its charging correctly right?*

Have tried :
1. push the on & home screen together for 1 minute. It only restart the ipod, then comes back again with the red-low battery image, with lighting image underneath it.
2. while pushing the on & home screen, I connect it with my PC. Still I only got the red-low battery image, with lighting image underneath it.

Can anybody please help to give advice how to solve this?
Thanks before.

Yeah my ipod had the problem aswell. I'm tried charging it with everything i think it is the new update but they are going to have to either make free repairs for every one and thats going to be a lot of people or find some way to update the problem and i think thats going to be near impossible since itunes dosen't recognise the device. I am not ever going to buy a repair for something theu have done in this way. Just going to have to use my phone for music wise just a little longer.

hi Thomas,

Tried your suggestion here, but still cant do.

1. press home button.
2. connect to USB cable.
3. device does turn on, showing the red-low battery image, with lighting image below, while still holding the home button.
4. holding the home button like about 2 minutes, no "connect to itunes" appeared.
5. released the home button, what I get is the red-low battery image, with lighting image below ...

quite frustrated with this condition.
anybody can help with another solution yet?
Thanks ...

No, the low battery with lightening is a "needs to be charged" indication. When charging, it should show a battery with red and then once it's charged enough green showing its charging progress. If you have really discharged it pretty much completely it can take a while to respond with anything other than the red battery image. If you still have that after, oh maybe an hour, I'd say you have a problem. I don't think I've ever seen it for anywhere near that long before the charging indication showed some green. The iPod battery type really doesn't like being completely discharged, so when it reaches the 20% warning pay attention to it. Personally I would even turn it off if it reaches the 10% warning. I've only let mine get that low once.

Just a question, are the iPods in question plugged directly into your Dell machine's USB ports? If not, are they plugged into a powered USB hub (i.e. one that has a power cord) or a wall adapter? If you try to charge the iPods with an unpowered hub, they won't charge. Another caveat: If you are charging from your computer, you can't allow it to go asleep or it may actually drain the iPod battery rather than charge it. I got a wall adapter so I didn't have to keep my computer on just to charge the iPod.

Oh, I just remembered, If you have an older "made for iPod" accessory that was made before the 2nd gen Touch came out, it may charge using firewire and the 2nd gen on won't charge with those pins. Not likely a problem with most people, but a possibility.

We haven't heard back from the original poster.

Just for clarification about your profile and your iPod Touch, there is NO 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch.

The only 3rd generation iPod Touch models are the 32GB and the 64GB models.

Obviously it should still charge but others here have tried other power sources and were able to get theirs to charge.

Hi grey bird,

Thanks for your reply ..
Yes, you're correct, I just realized it now.
low battery with lightning is a "need to be charged" indication.

Anyway, yesterday I plugged my ipod into a wall charger, for maybe 4 hour or so, but it's still haven't moved a bit ( battery still empty and the "needs to be charged" indication still there)

sighs, any more advice what I should do?

I'm going to contact the local AASP today ...
Thanks...

Contacting Apple might be the easiest way to get the iPod recovered, if possible. It certainly sounds like there might be a hardware issue. Have you tried the recovery method described above, it links to an Apple support article ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808).

Btw, did this happen spontaneously or were you doing an update? Just curious since I know some people click yes automatically when iTunes says an update is available and asks if they want to update. Although it might be too late for now, I've found that turning off my iPod and then turning it back on, immediately prior to syncing or performing a software update makes for a more reliable experience. I don't mean putting it in standby as is normal, but actually power cycling it. My theory is that doing this kills any hung apps/processes that might cause problems. This might prevent problems in the future.

Hi grey bird,

It happens spontaneously... My ipod is installed with the latest updates though, but I forgot when did I got the update.

I've tried the recovery method.
the step 3.
+While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB cable to iPhone, the device should power on.+
+Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.+

my ipod does turn on, but with the lowbat with lighting image. I already leave it for around half an hour, but the battery is not adding up.
If I'm not wrong, without sufficient battery, our ipod cant connect to itunes right?
I'm assuming that I actually cannot restore/recover my ipod now .. Need to power up the battery first.

I find it really weird though. It turns on with the lowbat-lighting image when I plugged it into a wall charger, but the battery just wont charge.
How come they response to need to charge but on other hand we cannot charge it..

Thanks for your advice about the power cycle...
