Can't update apps - 'cannot connect to itunes store'
This is what I've been getting all weekend on my iPhone 4 (4.1).
My Mac's iTunes also has been unable to deliver updates (OSX 10.6.4; iTunes 10.0.1); I can purchase and download iTunes music/videos just fine; but the check for app updates just spins for a bit and returns nothing.
*But my iPad can see and download it's app updates just fine!*
Any hints/suggestions? I've rebooted and logged in/out of my store account but that doesn't seem to fix it. Everything was working fine until this weekend....
I am experiencing this issue as well, and I have never used, downloaded, or installed the Ship Finder app.
Description of the issue: I have an iPhone 4 and a 2nd Gen iPod touch, and on either device when I tap the App Store app, on the Updates tab, I get the error "Cannot connect to iTunes Store." In iTunes on my iMac, when I select Apps in the source pane then click the "check for updates" button from the bottom, I can see at the top of the iTunes window where it shows activity, there is brief activity for less than a second; however, there is no message telling me that there are updates, or that there are no updates available.
The issue began occurring approximately two weeks ago. I do not have the Ship Finder app. Here is what I have tried so far with no success:
• I have updated to Mac OS X 10.6.5, iTunes 10.1, and iOS 4.1
• I have removed all the apps I have purchased over the last month from both iTunes on my iMac as well as on both iOS devices
• I have completely removed iTunes from my mac as per Apple Knowledge Base article HT1224 and then downloaded and installed iTunes from the web
• I have tried signing out of the iTunes store on both iOS devices by going to Settings > Store > Sign out. After signing out of the store, I turned off the devices by holding the sleep/wake button for a few seconds then sliding to power off. I then signed back in to the iTunes store on both devices under Settings > Store > Sign in.
• I have reset both iOS devices by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously for about ten seconds until the apple logo appeared
• I have signed into my iTunes Store account, viewed my account info, verified all my contact and billing information is correct, and have saved the changes. I attempted this in iTunes on the computer and on both of the iOS devices.
None of the above steps have been effective. I am able to download and install new apps in iTunes on the computer and on either of the iOS devices themselves without issue. I have not attempted to restore either of the iOS devices via iTunes as this is a rather invasive troubleshooting step that I am not sure will be effective.
I am going to wait until the iOS 4.2 update, and if the issue persists even after this update, I am going to contact AppleCare and request to speak to a Senior Advisor.
Delete ALL your applications, not just the latest ones. It could be possible a recently released update of an old application being corrupted in AppStore, similarly to what happened with "Ship Finder" and "Sylvan Archive".
Do not delete them all from your iPhone; try this on your iTunes desktop first and see how is going.
Thank you for your reply. After removing the app "The Sylvan Archives," the issue is resolved. I am now able to update apps without issue. Now that I know the culprit I don't have to remove the other hundred or so apps I use. Thanks again.
Same problems here. I don't have the 'ship finder' or 'Sylvan Archives' app to delete. So I guess there are more applications affected. I had contact with an iTunes help desk person, she couldn't help me further.
The strangest thing seems to be that I can still update just fine with my iPad. Just not from my mac or iPhone. Also when I log out of the iTunes store on my iPhone I still get the same 'Cannot connect to iTunes' message. Think this confirms that the problem isn't with the accounts, but rather with the device connecting to the update servers.
Thank You! Had same problem until Ship Finder deleted but also had to power down iphone for 30 seconds then restart to fully correct problem.
Iphone technical support did their best (I do have Applecare), and they mentioned problem may be with recently updated app. I suggested they they look over the Mac Forums because I noticed others were having the same issue but they were not interested. I kept checking and found solution in this forum this morning.
Moral: Check the forums first before tech support!
My solution to this problem...in case you don't have Shipfinder or SylvanArchives...is to order your apps by date in iTunes and remove all the apps for a month. [These apps will be moved to the trash, but you should copy them from there to a folder for safe keeping.] See if the app update works again. If not, remove another months worth of apps, copy them from the trash, and try the update again.
In my case, everything worked again after I removed all my apps back to July 2010. I got all my updates and iTunes was working again.
Then slowly add groups of apps from your saved folder back into iTunes (drag and dropping into the iTunes app window), and recheck whether the app update still works. Do not drag apps back in if they have been updated!
