Newton eMate 300 with no video

I'm not sure if it's a scrambled rom or a bad internal cable....

The eMate twangs when it powers up which my others don't then stays at a blank screen as if it is trying to load (other eMates boot instantly). Then after a minute or two it twangs again without any prompting at which point I can punch function keys and set the backlight but still nothing on the screen.

This makes me suspect that something has gone wrong with the video either the cable or hardware related. The hinges seem very tight as well vs my other ones.

The only other thing that I can think of is that this one might have had the option memory card in it originally which I swapped into my primary eMate. I have a feeling it's something in the ROM but the last thing I want to do is swap in a good ROM and render another eMate a paperweight....

Anyone else seen this?

I own most Macs from as far back as the Lisa to the DP G5, See my homepage for some of my collection.

If there’s no video at all, it’s definitely a cable issue. One thing to check is whether moving the display back and forth causes any video flicker after it boots. The double ‘twang’ could be simply a hardware issue related to the video cable being shorted out. Removing the memory upgrade might allow you to narrow down the cause of the rebooting.
