returning macbook to factory settings

i bought my friends macbook and i wanted to erase everything and start over. i was told to use the mac OS X install dvd, push "c" while its starting up and run it from there and i tried that but it didnt work. i looked online and it said to use a restore dvd that came with the computer but the only discs i have are the "mac OS X install dvd" and the "applications install dvd"

anyone know anything i can do to wipe it clean and start completely from new?

yea i looked at that but theres not an "options" at the select a destination menu.

What version OS X are the MacBook install disk? I have version 10.4.6 disks and when I put them in I get no options choice because they won't start on my disk with the version 10.6.4 hence no option choice. If your friend upgraded the OS X he may have the new software disk for the version you have. Ask them if they have additional Software disks they upgraded too. My original disk are Tiger but since then I have installed Leopard and then Snow Leopard. I now use the Snow Leopard disk to do what you want. That could be your problem.

my friend only used the computer like twice and tehy just got on the internet so they havent installed anything on it. the discs say
mac os version 10.6.1
disc version 1.0

if it doesnt have the option button how do i do it?
