Yep, I tried several different optical cables. I've been drowning in them since the early 90's when they were used for ADAT recording machines in professional recording studios.
Also, I've used the same cables to connect the Sundbar to my MacMini, and that works fantastic with all formats of source material I throw at it.
After receiving Apple TV as a gift, I purchased a 32" Vizio Razor LED TV and the Vizio VSB200 soundbar, after doing much research for affordable sound systems. After days of online research and store tramping to test various systems, the Vizio was far and above any competitor to the Yamaha.
The surround feature is *slightly processed,* but the vocal and instrumental reproduction is absolutely amazing for the money.
My initial problems involved the digital optical cable, which I first opted to go direct to the Soundbar from first the cable box, (which caused repeated audio failure, and resulted in analog as a solution), and, second, Apple TV, which was fine for every service from Netflix to Internet radio, but failed with rented HD iTunes movies.
After many hours researching this online, I did contact Vizio directly concerning the cable box issue, to no avail. When the Apple TV issue arose, I decided to visit the Apple store first to see if they had any insight into this issue.
Bingo! It took Apple to inform me that the HDMI cables from any device were sufficient for video and sound, and to connect only the television optical out to the soundbar. Why none of this is searchable in any Vizio documentation confounds me, but, in addition to being a longtime (once again reinforced) Apple advocate, I am now a Vizio advocate.
It's a marriage made in Manhattan.
Problem solved. While I've always been an Apple advocate, I am now a Vizio

Problem solved. While I've always been an Apple advocate, I am now a Vizio advocate as well.
