Flash Player causes browsers to crash after upgrade to 10.6.5

I upgraded to 10.6.5 yesterday and immediately after the restart, I tried to open Safari, but it hung and I had to Force Quit it. I also tried Chrome and Firefox, but they also hung. I eventually tracked the problem down to Flash Player and when I removed the plugin from /Library/Internet Plug-ins, Safari worked. I've tried clearing caches, using new accounts, verifying permissions and I even downloaded an old (from September) version of Flash Player. The standalone player worked perfectly, but the plugin caused Safari to crash again. Why is this?

I don't see it either, but something changed so it seems logical to exclude the extras (besides flash). Not because the huuuge hang report shows a problem with them, but because the alternative seems to be reinstalling OS X, since presumably 10.6.5 & Flash are ok together generally.

I don't know if a safe boot will disable macports.

10.6.4 had 10.0.45 but despite rumours, it didn't force it on anybody, unless they had an older one.

And, like magic, it works. 😀 I downloaded and installed 10,0,45,2 ( http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html , the link that says Flash Player 10) and suddenly, Safari doesn't crash when opened. Chrome still does, though, because it has its own version of Flash included. Firefox works too. It appears the problem was with the new version of Flash. Anyway, thanks!

because you'd already tried at least one version that was earlier than 10.6.5's 10.1.102.64 it didn't jump out to test with others.

Do note, the later versions were to fix security holes 😟

I know, it's annoying that I have to miss out on the security updates, but the newest version doesn't want to cooperate and I guess this'll have to do. I'm combining it with ClickToFlash, which is working wonderfully, so I'm content. 😀

Not really. I'm using ClickToFlash, so I'll only be running Flash on websites I trust.

FYI. I have Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and ClickToFlash 1.5.5 installed and both work marvelously in 10.6.5. You're installation has issues that you should be trying to fix and not blaming the installed software. 😉

I'd like to hear you expand on this a little. I've got an iMac with all the software updated and flash has no problem running. I've also got a mac mini that had 10.6.2 on it with the flash plugin updated and it worked fine. As soon as I applied the software update of the OS, flash hangs safari.

What's to expand? It's working on my two iMacs running 10.6.5 and the latest Flash players. There's something else going on with the mini, since you also don't have issues with the iMac.

I wouldn't call this answered really. There is a problem with Flash Player 10.1.x and the Mac mini (Late 2009) under 10.6.5. I have tried complete, bare reinstalls, and still have this issue. Works with FP 10.0.x, but not 10.1.x or 10.2.x beta.

No problems at all running Flash Player 10.1 r102 under 10.6.5 on my Mini. In fact, Safari 5.0.3 is running quite smoothly, much better than the previous version.
