GPS or location tracking on iTouch 2nd Gen.?

I see these apps for GPS and other location sensitive stuff and they say that they are good for both iphones and itouch devices... I do not think my 2nd generation iTouch could use them. Am I wrong? What is the scoop here? Can later generation devices use GPS apps? I have allowed some apps to be able to determine my location but not sure how this is actually accomplished. Can someone give me some idea of what is possible in this area? Thanks...

It depends on the app. An app that requires actual GPS hardware will not work, since the iPod touch lacks such hardware. The iPod can, however, use the location services that track where a WiFi access point is located, so any app that can work with those may be useful, although the accuracy is limited to how close you are to the access point and whether that access point is in the location service database.
