iTunes no longer checks for App updates

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that when looking at Apps in my library and hitting "Check for Updates" I was never seeing any apps that needed updated but my iPhone and iPad kept getting updates for apps. I watched this and noticed that after hitting Check for Updates in the app library section it flashes "accessing iTunes store..." very very fast. Just to read that I have to hit the update several times. If I click the Get More Apps next to it i go to the app store.

I can search and purchase apps on iTunes. I can look at my iTunes account and redeem gift cards and the help-check for updates works because it found the 10.1 update today and I installed it. Everything seems to work fine in the previous version and 10.1 except checking for app updates. It seems like it can't access the iTunes store here.

Two other computers (kids) in my house with iTunes work. I've disabled norton and it stil doesn't work.

Can anyone help me?

For everyone in this thread, check if you have an app called Ship Finder in your iTunes library, if so, delete it, move all files to trash, empty your trash, sync your phone to remove it from your phone(do not transfer purchases if prompted, as this will put it back in your library). You should be able to check for updates now. There is a problem with this app & Apple's servers.

I had this same problem and had to solve it the hard way: Back up my Library and then delete half the apps; see it that fixes it, and if so delete half that bunch to narrow it down. Here's the step by step:

First quit iTunes. Then back up these files in ~/Music/iTunes/ by copying them to another folder (option drag should do the trick):

iTunes Library
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Music Library.xml

Now launch iTunes again, select roughly half your app library and hit delete/backspace. The confirmations will ask you if you're sure you want to do this (hit Remove) and where you want to put the files (Keep Files).

At this point quit and relaunch iTunes (I'm not sure if that's strictly needed but I did it just to be sure) and see if you can successfully check for updates again.

-If you can check for update, something you deleted was the problem App. Quit iTunes again and replace the iTunes files you made copies of above with your backups, making sure to option drag again in order to copy the files and preserve your backups because you still need them. Now open iTunes again and you should have your whole app library back. Check for updates again just to be sure, and then, since you know the bad App was in the group you deleted last time, restart the process from above deleting half of the group you deleted before.

-If you still can't check for updates, delete half of the remaining apps following the steps above.

After doing this 3 or 4 times you should be able to narrow down which app is causing you problems. Get rid of it (perhaps re-download it if you still can to see a new download still has problems) and you should be all set!

Whoa, that's crazy! I too have ship finder, so I deleted, synced and now all is working properly! I do hope Apple and the Ship Finder guy get this sorted as I do occasionally depend on this app (among other things, I'm a toy designer and I always track my new products from the manufacturer in Hong Kong to the Port of Long Beach here in California.)

Ship Finder was the problem for me. My iPad has Ship Finder HD, it updated OK using the App Store app. My old iPhone 3G doesn't have Ship Finder, it updated OK using the App Store app. After deleting Ship Finder from my iPhone 4 it updated OK using the App Store app. After deleting it from iTunes iTunes could then update OK.

My MobileMe account's /Library is fubar, I've been working with Apple tech support & engineers for over two weeks with no resolution. They're in denial that anything can possibly go wrong with MobileMe...

I love Apple, but any large organization is going to have pinheads that refuse to acknowledge their humanity and innate ability to make errors.

While the issue arose with version 2.20 of ShipFinder, it doesn't appear to be anything to do with the application itself (which isn't too surprising, as otherwise Apple would have a vulnerability in their App Store). Here's how I came to this conclusion:

I deleted ShipFinder from my iTunes and iPod Touch. Check for Updates then worked. I read that this issue arose with ShipFinder 2.20, so I thought I'd be smart. I have backups of the apps folder, so I restored ShipFinder 2.17. Check for Updates once again stopped working. I deleted ShipFinder 2.17, and now Updates is working.

Fortunately, I still have the even better ShipFinder HD to keep me entertained until Apple fixes their store.

Everything started working for me today and I did nothing. This morning for a short time I could not connect to www.apple.com. I could get to the store and the forum through direct links but could not get to www.apple.com. This happened for about 30 minutes. Right after www.apple.com started working my iPhone started showing updates. Right after that iTunes started working. So this morning sometime between 11:00 AM & 1:00 PM EST everything started working for me after a short period where www.apple.com was not available. This had to be something on the Apple end.

The problem I and some others had is not related to ship finder. I have never used ship finder and didn't even know it existed until reading this thread. I thought it could be a library problem and was going to start cleaning up my library of about 750 apps tomorrow. I'm glad I didn't have to do that.
