EPSON Perfection 2480 scanner not working under 10.6.5

I get the following error when using Preview's "Import from Scanner":

"The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9930.)"

I get the following highly informative error when using Image Capture:

"Scanner reported an error - An error occurred during scanning."

What's strange is that if I select "Hide Details" when using Image Capture, it will do a scan using whatever default values it has picked.

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Just wanted to add my experience to this topic. I have an Epson Perfection 2480 that was running just fine using the Image Capture interface until a few days ago when Software Update pulled "Epson Printer Software Update." Then I got the dreaded "error occurred while scanning" problem.

To resolve this, I went into /Library/Image Capture/Devices and deleted the Epson Scanner file, which was version 5.3.1. Apparently this version is the culprit. I then downloaded the epson13969.dmg from Epson's website. This installs the 5.3.0 version of the file. The scanner now works.

I also ran Software Update again and told it to "Ignore Update" on the Epson update.

I was able to get my Epson Perfection 2580 work with Image Capture doing what MaccaRose wrote up to point 6. Then I ran the Apple software update (as suggested on the Epson support site) which installed an update for the Epson printer (he said 'printer' but I was updating the scanner driver).
After the update, Image capture worked fine.
Hope this can help

Thanks to ChrisMoore585 post I got my 3490 Photo to work today - yeah!

Now I am really happy because I do not like using Image Capture to do my scanning. I really prefer to use Epson Scan to do all my scanning with my 3490.

Here's what I did:

1. Go into /Library/Image Capture/Devices and delete any Epson Scanner files there.

(check all 3 locations- Library folder, System folder, and ~user/Library folder)

2. Turn off scanner and unplug the USB connection from the computer.

3. Remove the Epson Scanner from the printer list (System Prefs-> Printers&Fax)

4. Go to Epson's website (Drivers and Support) and download the following files for the 3490 Photo Scanner.

5. Uninstall any exisiting Epson scan software using: [EPSON Scan Uninstaller v1.00]

epson12887.dmg

[DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!]

***Be sure you select UNINSTALL and NOT "easy install" (default) from the pull down menu when you launch the uninstaller!!!****

6. Restart your mac

7. Install [ICA Scanner driver for Image Capture] - epson13969.dmg

8. Install [TWAIN Driver and Epson Scan Utility] - epson13834.dmg

9. Plug usb connection in and turn on scanner. Launch Epson Scan (in your applications folder) If it does not work, try restarting your mac and try re-launching Epson Scan.

It worked for me!

Another very good alternative for scanning (if you just can't get this to work) is VueScan which works well with just about any scanner (I got it to work with the 3490) - you can find it at macupdate.com

I would just like to add that I followed Chris's hint and had success. I might add that I found that the Epson file in Library/Image Capture/devices/ that gave me trouble declared itself as version 5.3.0 in Get Info,BUT when I checked that more carefully I found it was actually 5.3.1, the acknowledged culprit. You need to Show Package Contents and then look at the info.plist file which actually declares it has a bundle version of 5.3.1. The epson13969.dmg file installs the 5.30 version.

I have an Epson Perfection 610. I used to use it on an iMac G4 but I now am using an intel iMac. I could not get this to work right using the image capture software. I spent a couple of hours trying all of the different drivers but none worked. As long as this scanner is running under "Image Capture" it does not work correctly, it was the same way in the power PC mac believe it or not. On that mac I ran into the problem when I updated to OS10 from OS 9. The problem on the G4 was that when I scan in color I have red blue and green images that do not line up but instead are slightly ajar. I have the exact same problem with the Intel Mac. I was expecting that when I downloaded the new drivers ( I only downloaded the ones for the intel) that the Epson scan app would appear, it never did. To fix the problem in the old G4 I somehow got ahold of the "Epson Scan" application and installed it on the G4. I do not remember where I got that. Perhaps it was on an OSX 9 install cd.Perhaps it downloads automatically with the driver but is somehow blocked on an intel mac. So, for the G4 I had to install the epson scan application and run the scanner from that. To fix the problem with the new intel I deleted the epson plug in from the 'Devices" folder from Library/Image Capture/ Devices and performed the epson uninstall. I then copied the plug in from my G4 Image Capture folder as well as the "Twain Data Sources" file. TDS was a separate file in the "Image Capture" folder and I put it in the Image Capture folder of the Intel Mac. I also copied the Epson Scan application from the G4 and put that in the application folder on my new intel. So, in short, I replaced the plug in and added the Epson Scan Application and the TDS folder and voila, it works. Also, I had installed rosetta from the snow leopard install dvd.As far as I can tell, the driver is either only half of the problem or not the problem at all. The Epson scanners just do not run well in anything but the epson scan application. You get that application for your epson model and it will work.
