This is a confusing area.
DPI is a meaningless concept on your computer. DPI means "dots per inch" however, your computer has neither dots nor inches. It has pixels. DPI only makes sense when you print.
So, your pics have a fixed number of pixels. So, with a 6MP camera it will be 3,000 x 2,000 pixels. (a total of 6 million pixels)
If you go to print that 3,000 x 2,000 at 240 dpi it will make a 12.5 x 8.3 inch print. (3000/240, 2000/240)
Print it at 100 dpi and it will make a 30 x 20 inch print. (3000/100 etc)
But each time you're still printing the same 6 million pixels.
When someone asks you for a file at 240 dpi they're not giving you enough information. You know the dpi, but what’s the area? Essentially, if you have an image 240 pixels then you can print it at 240 dpi - but it will only be a 1" print.
