iPhone 4 handset speaker problems

Hi.

Hope someone can help me.

I have an iPhone4 32GB and I am getting no audio out of the handset speaker. I've had the phone 3 weeks and the fault may have been there since purchase as I've only been using the headset until today.

It works perfectly through the loudspeaker and headset but I get absolutely no audio from the handset speaker during phone calls. I have tried a 'soft reset' and the plug in and unplug idea but both to no luck. When I play MP3's they play through headset when its plugged in and loudspeaker when its not. I have tried using Skype and standard calls.

I have a screen protector but it does not cover the 'foil' bit at all or the front camera.

I'm reluctant to do a hard reset as I have 25GB of data and it'll take forever to resync. I am running iOS 4.1

Thanks for any help

I called AppleCare, told them about the problem and went through a checklist with me. once he saw there was a hardware problem, he made an appointment for me at the Beijing Genius Bar for me, entered the necessary info in a new case number he set up. I went to the Genius Bar and they swapped a new phone. Excellent service all around.

My internal speaker has suddenly stopped working - well it the volume is incredibly low to the point of not being able to hear the other person if a gnat flies past me! The external speaker and headset all work fine - just the speaker that is against your ear if you are making a normal call.....!?

I have tried a hard reset and various other methods suggested on this and other blogs so far, all to no avail - do I really have to go in to an iphone store to resolve this or does someone have a solution?

Please help!!

BTW - do Apple experts review this forum, or is it only us poor users trying to help each other out?

Not sure if you solved this problem. I had the same problem with my Iphone 4, since I don't have any warranty, I fixed the problem by replacing the handset speaker.... I took a chance and ordered it through Dealextreme, cost me $2.90 with free shipping. Followed some online instructions to take apart the phone ...... Now it works perfectly fine........ Hope this helps........

I have the same problem, unfortunately out of the box the white iphone was faulty. tried all the suggestions, all failed. sending it back for a replacement.

It seems, scanning the comments, that we have a number of purchases in asia. could this be part of a bad batch distributed in this part of the world?

i bought mine in malaysia.

I had the same problem, but I suppose it was a lucky guess the way I solved it. I supposed the problem was caused for bug in the software which made that when I disconnected the wired headphones, the sound was still trying to go to them, because the problem arose in the scenario. At first I tried the same that you all, restarting but it didn't work. Then I tried different things like connecting and disconnecting the headphones, working with the speakerphones, Bluetooth , and after some time It worked fine and it's being that way for a week now. I hope this last!!!. I keep thinking it’s not a hardware related problem but a software one, maybe with a bug no “sensing” the change from a way of speaker to another.

Hi all,

Same problem here, this time in Northern Europe! Got iPhone 4 32G Black yesterday and handset just does not work. I´ve searched thru all kinds of websites etc. and had lot of ideas but no correction to problem. Headset and speaker are OK.

Unfortunately I cannot help anyone, but just informing that Apple is supplying some bad iPhone 4 in Northern Europe; Finland to be exact.

Same issue here, too! My first iPhone 4 lasted nine days and then had serious software issues. They replaced it but then my second iPhone 4 lasted only 3 weeks before the handset speaker stopped working. After contacting Apple, I did a complete restore and that seemed to fix it! However, it is now broken AGAIN and I've restored it three times with no luck. So disappointing.
