Strange problem with default mail account

Just recently, the behavior of my default mail account (ATT yahoo server) has changed. This is a regular POP account, but suddenly, although mail still comes into the account as it should, the messages are not treated as new messages: there's no mail sound when mail for this account arrives, no count of new messages, and none of the new messages show the unread dot.

It still behaves normally on my computer, so I don't think it's a change on ATT's end.(These are not messages I've already read on another device, so it's not likely to be some IMAP-ish change on the server side, either.) None of my mail settings are any different than they have been. Other mail accounts via the same server still behave normally. I've tried re-syncing, power cycling, restoring, and nothing has made any difference.

Ok I have had a breakthrough. I was having some issues with not being able to delete messages on my iPad, so I had to delete my account twice and reinstall it. I then realised that when I was on the 2nd page of the email account setup there are two options at the top, pop or imap set up. I realised that my previous account set up was imap and not pop. I changed it to pop and hey presto, now my email messages are coming in properly and are not shown as read. I also compared all the settings with my iPhone and noticed I also had a different pop address that I was using on my iPhone, which I changed. This may also have made a difference, although I believe it was the imap vs pop. Try it and see if that works for you too. My problems is now solved! Success!

I had exactly the same problem but I *think* it's fixed now. I went to Settings/Mail/ then chose the account which does work (in this case my G mail works, my work e mail doesn't) so, chose G mail, then account, then Outgoing Mail Server.

You should see a screen which says Primary server (in my case G Mail) and below 'Other SMTP servers' my work e mail is listed under other but for some reason it was switched to OFF. I changed it to ON and I'm now getting the blue dot, the red numbers and the alert sound.

Good luck.
