iPhone 4 mic only not working in phone app!

Hello

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1. Today people on the other end in calls couldn't hear me. Thought it was the mic that was broken but when using other applications like skype or voice recorder it works perfectly. I have tried to use the speaker and headset but it doesn't work in calls also, so i think this is a software error. Does anybody know how to fix this?

It seems there are many of us with this problem. I too have the exact same problem, my mic works 20% of the time and it does not matter is the headset is in or not. My warranty is also expired and I live in Costa Rica so repair is very inconvenient and expensive. I hope apple will uphold their reputation and validate the expensive price of their products by helping all of us solve this problem.

Is there any word on their stance?

Same problem with me. My iPhone4 works fine except when I actually want to use it as a phone. I have had the phone since June of 2010, and the problem just started this week. I can hear everyone else, but no one can hear me. If I reboot the phone, sometimes it works for one call and then goes back to no one hearing me, but even that has not worked each time. Apple? Help?

Took my iphone to the Apple Store yesterday, and they restored to original Facotry Settings. The phone worked well for about 8 hours, and then the same issues returned. Either no one can hear me at all (although I can hear them perfectly) or there is so much static that they cannot hear me. Again--I can hear them perfectly. The Apple rep said that if the Factory reset did not work, I would have to buy a new phone . . .not happy about this at all!

After trawling through all the Q's and A's and youtube stuff I decided to take the back off to see if there was anything obvious (loose wire etc.) There was nothing obvious so decided to slightly loosen and then re-tighten the screws near the headphone jack area, (being very very careful not to overtighten them again) Put the back on again and amazingly the mic now works in all apps including the phone. My calls have been fine for about a month now with no interference/ voice not being heard by other caller problems. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has tried this and their results. I've no idea why this would work and indeed whether it has cured the problem. I DO NOT recommend you try this if you are unsure of what you're doing. I would not like to be responsible for you damaging your phone further!!!!

Hi, I have the same issue as well.

My iPhone 4 is on iOS5.01. Has been working perfectly for the past 16 months.

Few days ago, my mic started to give me problems. Although I had no trouble with FaceTime, Skype, Viber etc.

But when it comes to Phone Calls, using speaker mode won't work, using the original headset wouldn't work as well.

Hence my iPhone cannot make or receive calls as the other party cannot receive what I am saying.

I tried the voice memo app and when I speak to the mic (both top and bottom of the phone), the pin moves. This clearly shows that the mics are working.

I tried restarting my phone. Restoring my phone but it just wouldn't work.

I can't drop it by an Apple Store has I do not live in a country that has an official Apple Store. But there are authrorized sellers in my country. Since this is such a common failure, and I am out of warranty, can the authorized sellers replace one for me if it is deemed to be a hardware failure?

I am hoping that this is a software issue. So can the kind people of Apple attend to this matter? I think I speak for everyone here when I say we would very much like your response on this issue.

So please let us know what can be done or else a bunch of us will have a phone that cannot make calls.

Thank you.

Hi, have same issue as wel. bought my Iphone 4 32G in UK apple store summer 2011.

Microphone is in an increasing frequency not working during phone calls.

did reset , software update etc.... nothing helps

No damage, no moisture but most likely mainboard problem (loose connection in the circuitboard/microphone)

Now they tell me to pay Euro 409,95 for a repair/replacement.

Apple please help, this can not be the case if improper equipment after normal use of a bit more then a year is not working anymore.

I brought the iPhone4 for my wife back in Sep'2010.

Everything was working fine until Dec'2011, then the mic started playing up. She made international calls to her sister and mum but they cannot hear her but she can hear them. Originally thinking it might be her ear accidentally touching the 'mute' button.

When I tried calling her from my phone, it works something and seems to be an intermittent problem.

All other apps (Skype, Viber, etc.) works without problem.

I decided to reset the phone and upgraded to iOS 5, but no joy. In fact, the mic on the phone now fails 95% of the time.

Speaking to Apple, they are saying it is out of warranty and I need to pay for a call to get it look at.

After reading this thread and other articles on the web, I see there are many people with the same problem.

Does anyone know whether Apple is accepting this as a problem???

My wife is having the exact same issue with her iPhone4. Mic stops working but only in the phone app. All other mic applications work fine. Going to try our luck with the Apple store tomorrow but she is also out of warranty and it sounds from previous posts like Apple is not standing behind their customers on this issue. Hope that is not actually the case. Seems like a known problem at this point.
