Importing iTunes Library

I recently upgraded from an old Windows XP laptop to a new Windows 7 laptop, which comes with a new username and a new file structure. When I tried to migrate my iTunes library over, the library pointed at the old obsolete file structure, so iTunes was not able to recognize any of the music in my library. Is there any way to get iTunes to match on the old songs in their new homes?

I just opened it in notepad, saved it as a .txt in the notepad menu, clicked 'yes' to replace the .xml file, and got the error message again. Is there anything else we can try?

On a sidenote, how can I get windows to display the file extensions? I'm new to Windows 7 and haven't quite gotten the hang of it yet.

In Vista, Control Panel > Folder options > View tab.
Uncheck *Hide extensions for known file types*.

Should be similar in Win7.
