I recently purchased the iPad camera connection kit for an event coming up, when I tried to use the SD card reader on my iPad, nothing happen. I then tried it out on my moms iPad running iOS 3.2 and it works fine... Anyone else having issues with iOS4.2 and the camera connection kit?
Thank you, if you were referring to my post, the Folder Function is nice to me. I wish there was not a limit in apps you can put in, but making like Games1, Games2, etc, works okay for me. The Multi-tasking part I am still learning, as I cannot figure out how to have two open at a time, but it sure is nice that downloading an app does not halt if you go into another program and it stopping until you leave presently used app.
If this Camera Kit issue is worked out in a timely manner, this unit would do the two things I cared to own it for. I am not an expert with Apple Products, but am fairly decent from 9th grade electronics (35 years ago). I am not sure this change from 100ma to 20ma will allow these too much power being used?
Being a noob with Apple Products, I am willing to give up folders and multi-tasking for now to use the CCK. Is it possible to revert back to an old OS that worked for this feature?
Sadly I am experiencing similar issues. After upgrading to 4.2.1 I am no longer able to connect my Sony DSC-V3 with the USB dongle. I get a message that the device is not supported and that the media may be damaged (it's not.) This particular camera has always worked flawlessly with the CCK under 3.2.x, and it is of course using the camera's internal battery while connected over USB so I don't think the power drop on the iPad dock connector is necessarily the culprit in this case.
Mine is an older camera but like I said, it's always worked before, and I don't want to replace the camera as it still works fantastically well for me. Unfortunately it doesn't use an SD card so I've only been able to test with the USB dongle. I certainly would never have bought the CCK if I thought there was a chance that Apple would render it useless for my needs with an iOS update. I think I have the 3.2.2 ipsw somewhere, guess I'll see if I can figure out how to downgrade, which ***** because I was looking forward to getting an AppleTV for Christmas and using AirPlay with it. Seems like every time I get ready to throw "all in" with Apple they do something like this ... they make awesome tech but it's so frustrating!
Well, I gave it one more shot with my USB-connected Sony camera before throwing in the towel, and was able to get it to work. It seems like iOS is a lot less forgiving now about what it recognizes on that dock connector. Every time I connected the camera before, under 3.2, I was able to just plug it in and the photo importer launched automagically - no fiddling with settings on the camera. Now, when I connect via USB, I have to select "PTP" on the camera menu. Apple's support page for the CCK indicates that you should use PTP, so this appears to be working as designed, but I never had to fiddle with the camera settings before - and certainly never got any errors indicating that the media was damaged. I guess it's possible that something got changed in the camera setup somewhere along the line and I'm just a crazy person, but I'm more inclined to believe that something has changed software-wise on the iPad.
Anyway, I'm just relieved to have this functioning again. Apple, you're back in my good graces for now.
My Blue Yetti microphone no longer works with my iPad also. The mike worked fine through the camera connection kit prior to the iOS 4.2.1 upgrade. I have not tried any USB flash drives again yet, but I see others are having problems with this too. Many folks bought this particular $150.00 mike specifically because a number of Apple pundits tested it and said it worked. It did and worked very well until this last upgrade. Apple needs to put the settings back where they were. It is ruining the versatility of the iPad.

Apple’s iPad Camera Connection Kit is crippled for many people. The Apple Camera Connection Kit includes two adapters: 1 USB
connector and 1 SD card reader.
The essence of the issue with the connection kit and iOS 4.2 is that connected devices that require power of more than 20mA will
no longer work. That means that many USB keyboards (Apple’s included) will no longer work with the iPad, as well as USB flash drives.
When the user connects a device that is not self-powered and requires more than 20mA of power from the iPad they get the following alert: “The connected USB device requires too much power.”
This issue not only pertains to camera-related devices but also is an issue for microphones. USB microphones were compatible with the
iPad running iOS 3.2.2 but now some of them apparently use more than 20mA of the iPad’s USB power. Although many users are unhappy
that they cannot use many of their USB flash drives, USB keyboards, or USB microphones anymore users are even angrier that many of their
USB cameras no longer work with the iPad.
The iPad Camera Connection Kit’s USB adapter was built so users with USB cameras could plug their cameras in via USB on the go.
Now they cannot anymore as most USB cameras require too much power from the iPad. This issue is unpleasant for photographers relying
on the iPad to import and upload their photos on the fly. It is unknown whether or not this is simply a bug in iOS 4.2 but we do hope that
it is and that Apple will fix it in an upcoming software update. To summarize, the iPad Camera Connection Kit no longer works with
non-self powered devices.
Sadly but true. I hope Apple will fix this in a future release because my iPad is now useless for me as a photographer 😟
i'm also very disappointed in this most recent update. for me things are a little different, i actually won my 32G wifi ipad, a competition at work blessed me of course and i walked away with what at the time i thought was a good product but didn't really know of any use of the unit. being a amateur photographer, i looked around, found the CCK and ran it with a card reader to transfer images from my CF card to the ipad in RAW format.
this worked fantastically, i was ecstatic about this new found functionally and thought "great, now i have a very good use for the unit." however now with the update, nothing in the CCK works and as such, if an update isn't released to adjust the power output back to 100Mah i fear i may be selling this otherwise awesome unit for something that is going to suit my needs.
i beg the apple development team, please fix this, i love your product, i dont want to have to sell it because it doesn't cater to the uses of a consumer photographer.
I just got my camera connedtion kit today. I was able to upload photo's and video to my ipad.
my IOS is 4.2. the video was from my Flip mino HD and photo's from my Kodak easy share M381 via usb cable.
I bought my Camera Connection kit (CCK) yesterday. It works fine on my ipad 3.2 (connected to my iphone via USB+ CCK adapter, Kodak Camera via USB+ CCK adapter and SD card reader CCK adapter), but in my wife's ipad 4.2 it works only with the iphone and Kodak Camera: Card reader adapter doesn't work. In some posts, people says FW 4.2.1 reduce power to the ipad connector (from 100 mA to 10 mA).
Hope Apple will fix this in a new 4.2.x update.
As others have noted, upgrading the iPad destroyed the usefulness of the cck. I am a professional photographer. Like others here, my use of the iPad for photographic storage, review, and client reviews, and gallery presentations has been crippled.
My Canon 1dmk3 and 5dmk2 use CF cards. The 1dmk3 also uses an sd card for backup. I prefer to rely on the CF card because of its larger form factor. I have arthritis in my hands and have problems with sd cards.
I used to use a Sandisk 6 in 1 card reader. I can't anymore. I also teach photography, and used that reader to import students' images. I can't anymore.
I can't even delete previously uploaded files that were not "directly" imported into the iPad!
And, to make matters worse, Apple created a strict PC-like 8 character naming convention for the files.
This is totally unacceptable!!!
Using the cck's sd reader dongle also is problematic, with the sd card reader not recognizing some of my cards that were recognized previously.
PLEASE, Apple, fix this ASAP! It is essential to the usability of the iPad! This is a central reason why I bought it in the first place, and you broke it.
I've been using apple products since the early 1980's, starting with the Apple IIc. I stuck with you in the down times, always giving you gobs of business over the years. I preached apple to everyone.
Crippling the cck, I believe, is the most boneheaded thing you have ever done!
I don't think of myself as a pro but technically I guess I am. I don't shoot for a living but I do occasionally sell my photography skills.
I would never consider using a CCK to load pics onto the iPad. I always load them onto my Mac first so that I have some reasonably powerful software to improve the shots. I transfer them from the Mac to the iPad only after I've made them the best that I'm able.
