Sony hdr-xr200 not recognized

Please give your complete computer configuration. How is the camera connected? What other devices are connected? What exactly are you doing in FCP and what happens when you do it?

Are you using v4.0.1? Are you using the correct AVCHD preset? Are you getting a warning message? It can take a long time for a hard drive based AVCHD camera to load in the log and transfer window.

Your camera is tapeless. You do not use LOG AND CAPTURE. Besides, you aren't shooting DVCPRO HD, you are shooting AVCHD, that comes in to FCP as ProRes.

you said to use the ProRes, but that suggests that the camera connects with FireWire. Mine uses USB.

No...tapeless formats don't require firewire. That's for tape based only. Tapeless can use the USB connection just fine.

Settings for what? The capture settings don't matter because you're not capturing.

Just got through ingesting media from a Sony HDR-XR200V camera into FCP 7.0.3 successfully.
Couple of things.

I believe the Log and Transfer has problems if the media storage on the camera contains a mixture of stills and video formats. It really works best when there is only HD material on the HDD, and that HD material is all of one type.
Note: the 200V can be set to record standard definition material as well as HD. If you have Standard Definition clips on your camera, they will not transfer via Log and Transfer, and can quite possibly prevent any HD clips from transferring. There is a different workflow for ingesting SD file based video into FCP.

If you are plugging in the camera, and iPhoto is opening, then you have still images recorded to your media. Off load them with iPhoto (if you want them) and then delete them from the camera.

Now with video only on the HDD, try Log and Transfer and see if it works.

When you open the Log and Transfer window click on the little gear that is in the upper center of the screen to access Log and Transfer Preferences.

Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo, and the conversion to Pro Res LT. Click OK.

What are you talking about? ProRes is a codec. It has nothing to do with the frame resolution. Are you looking at capture setting. Forget about capture settings. You're not capturing.

The XR200 is not an HDV camera. Everything I see on the Internet says this is an AVCHD camera. The camera is not seen at startup. It should be seen when the log and transfer window is opened. That can take some time with a hard drive camera. Meg's graphic shows you where to set the ProRes or ProRes LT codec for transfer.
