So yesterday i was trying to upgrade to 4.3 and recieved a loop (and 1611). I haven't used umbrella. I haven't got gs.apple in the host file. But my phone is now alive. So what i did (maybe there are odd steps):
1) i added 17.112.176.11 gs.apple.com line to the host file (win xp);
2) restarted my computer;
3) manually downloaded firmware 4.2.1 which was my before yesterday;
4) shift+restore 4.2.1;
5) then you will receive error 3xxx but you phone will restart and be alive;

I think this will work only if you or itunes didn't corrupt your firmware and the problem is just a loop.

On your MAC.
I had the issue now with my iPhone 4 and iPad to upgrade to 4.3.1 and this worked like a charm:

Quit iTunes
Open a terminal window
Type: sudo nano /etc/hosts and hit enter (make sure to respect the spaces and slashes)
You will be asked for the password, the administrator password... the one you use to log in as administrator.
You will get to a weird editor
Find the line that contains gs.apple.com. it will have a number (IP address) in front of it.
Add a # at the beginning of that line (comment out) and then press Ctrl and O to save.
Start again iTunes
Start again the update process.
Worked.

The fix here totally saved me a 90 minute trip to and from the Apple Store! I was updating from 4.3 to 4.3.1 and had to comment out (add the # in front of the appropriate line) one of the line and bingo!

NOTE: I thought this wasn't going to work because one of the lines was already #'ed out, but there are 2 lines with the same extension so put a # in front of the one that doesn't have it.

Godspeed to the person who figured out this buried fix!

Well nice for those having gs.apple.com in their hosts file.

For those of us that don't... no solution yet

Manually updating to 4.3. I get 3194 error
Manually updating to 4.3.1 and get 1013 error (although it seems it is installing and checking, but when iTunes indicates it is checking firmware updates, the 1013 error appears.
