How do you create the "link' to your printer ?
Is my printer need AirPrint or just a wireless connection ?

I agree that the much hyped airprint was mis-sold. Just a few hp printers?? What proportion of the population actually has one of these few printers? Ohh but hold on, its ok because you can buy 3rd party software to make it work.... but even then only if you have a Mac to run it on?? Ive never had an apple product until I got my Ipad and its a beautifully designed piece of kid but ohh I can't use the print function unless I have a Mac?? (I assume that is true because no-one replied to that question when it was previously asked) wait, I'll just run out and buy one now because you can only print if you are a true apple adict and have other apple products. The real question is if apple knew it was going to be only a handful of printers why have they not written the software enabling people to use other printers rather than let someone else do it and charge for it, and why have they not written it for Macs and PCs? Im an apple customer,I have an Ipad. Im a new apple customer, so far Im not impressed!

Brilliant! Your suggestion worked for me. We'd just bought a Pixma MP990 wifi printer from Apple and I was disappointed that it wasn't on their airprint compatible list. I followed your (Julian Wright) suggestion to purchase PRINTOPIA and yes it worked. I was a bit confused at first because I went looking for it at the Apple App Store (I couldn't find it) and then I realised that I should purchase it via the internet and download it onto my computer. Thanks for the advice.

If your non-Apple computer was able to use the Search Discussions to the right you would have been able to find out there is a "patch" openly available that lets you use a printer attached to a Windows PC and print from you iPad. You can also Google to get the information on how to do this. Why was it not included, especially in their own OS? Because it was pulled at the last minute due to a claim by a patent troll. Oh those darn attorneys!

As far as the "handful of printers" until (and if) other printer manufacturers implement AirPrint there won't be more of them. And Apple can't force Canon or Epson or others to do so.

How is Apple "promoting" HP printers? Apple openly posted the AirPrint protocols before 4.2.1 was released and HP decided to make the majority of their ePrint printers also AirPrint compatible. Canon, Epson, etc. decided not to. HP is counting on people with iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads to, when they buy a printer, buy one of theirs since it works with iOS devices. They spent the money to do so and they are betting that they will profit from it.

NO. That is one of the shortcomings/bugs of the AirPrint system on the iPad. Perhaps the more expensive printers can sense which size paper is available, but the cheaper ones can't.

To get around it you will need an app. A free one that prints saved Photos, saved files and scans, is HP iPrint Photo. I like it because it provides an ability to rotate and re-size an image using two fingers, in addition to being able to choose standard paper and image sizes.

HP iPrint Photo can also print to some printers that do not support AirPrint.

OK, assuming you are a system admin, and doing this is something that your local IT policies permit, you could set up a device on the local network (Ethernet), as well as have it create an AdHoc Network (wireless) for iPads to connect to and print from. Most of the Wireless and Networked LaserJets should support this configuration (designated by the n and w in their model names). The Novell NOS does not currently support AirPrint, so I know of no way at the moment to allow you to print through it. Your other option is to get one of the consumer printers that does not have any Ethernet capabilities, and simply set it up in AdHoc mode for direct printing.

Not sure either is the answer you're looking for, but at the moment there are not a lot of options.

Just trying to help.

Agreed. Misleading information and poor communication at the heart of it. Several IOS updates and still cant print native from the iPad.

At what point were you mislead? The list of AirPrint compatible printers was released at the same time as AirPrint. Anything that was in prerelease versions of the software was never promised.
