AirPlay to Apple TV only sound and no picture to airplay option

Airplay is not working right for me or there is a setting I'm missing.

When I start a movie on my iPad or iPhone and I click the airplay icon it lets me choose between the device itself and the apple tv, however it only is for sound, no video.... Why? This is the same on the iPad and iPhone.

When I click on a picture I don't even get a airplay option at all. This is the same on both devices.

I don't see any setting for this either.

Does anyone know if i can use air Play From my apple tv (second gen) to my ipad for sound only.
(I have the newest ios for ipad and the new version for apple tv.)
I know i can use the tv speakers. But i want to do just the opposite. i want to play my netflix on my apple tv and "wifi stream in any way" the sound to the ipad or iphone so that i dont disturb others with the sound. But i get the benefits of the big screen.

Oh yeah i dont want to buy the airport express. I already have plenty of wireless routers.

CAn someone please help

air video works great on airplay
aljazeera, CityTV worked for a moment then stopped,
Other apps never worked, only sound was streaming
it seemed almost random...

I wanted to add that "air video" app streamed all kind of videos, from MKVs to DIVx from my PC, and also it's a background app in IOS, so i was airplaying my MKV while doing other stuff on my IPhone/Ipad! great app

x-webkit-airplay="allow"

If the developer of any website adds this code to their HTML5 video tag, the user will be able to send video to the AppleTV via AirPlay. Without that, you will need a hack in order to enable the AirPlay, by default it is not enabled in the standard HTML 5 video tag.

Hope this helps. I added to my tag and now I have my own mini-Netflix. Awesome!

Hello there;

I am having the same issues. I've tried every single fix posted and I can't play any rented movie anymore. The interesting thing for me is that it worked when I first bought the Apple TV. This is the only Apple product that is given me the blues... From the raw number of postings it is a problem for quite a few people. They need to fix this!!

I have been reading all the posts and maybe I missed something but I have this problem also. I first noticed the issue with HBOgo and MAXgo. I assumed it was a function turned off by HBO. Disappointed but OK, I understand so forgot about it for a while then.....

I have DirecTV and was hoping to use Apple TV for on Demand TV shows through the websites or Apps. I use my iPad and watch different videos in any of several apps Facebook, TV.COM, NBC, ABC, Google, Safari Initially I assumed video to AppleTV was not supported.

One night when my son was watching netflix through Apple TV, I clicked on TV.COM App on my iPad and the video started playing on the Apple TV instead of Netflix. I though great, I can watch on demand TV shows through this APP. Unfortunately since my iPad is Set to close the screen after 2 minutes of inactivity. the screen went blank. When I started the video back up, I was only getting sound for the show I was watching. I could not get it to play video again no matter what I did Just playing around, I have successfully played videos from all of these apps on the tv with airplay BUT I can not get them to play on a consistent basis. I have tried to rewatch the same videos that worked once and cannot get video.

I have tried changing every setting I thought could possibly affect this but I have not figured out a pattern. Please help this frustrated Apple TV user!

I have updated my iPad and Apple TV to the latest OS.

There is a free app called Remote. Get it from the app store. After its installed, you can either use it as a remote control for atv - but you can also access your shared library thru it. It's obvious how to do that when you see it ... It's basically the same as the COMPUTERS link on the atv. If you play any movies or music or anythingusing that shared library, you will get full audio and video from atv.

The Apple Remote app allows you to control iTunes on the computer.

It does not display the shared library on the iPad.

It does on my iPad. When I open the Remote app, in the left pane, there are two options: AppleTV and "Isaac ....'s Library" If i select "Isaac ......'s Library" it displays exactly what is on iTunes on my mac, all categories (music, movie, even my playlists). If I select a movie, a song, a playlist, etc. it automatically plays thru AppleTV perfectly.

If you select AppleTV from the pane, it acts as a remote control for ATV.

You can view the library but you cannot play the shared library and view a movie on the iPad screen using the Remote app. That is what I meant.

Selecting the Shared library in the Remote app controls the computer just as selecting the AppleTV control the AppleTV.

Hi I read your post and had a question. You said to go into the appletv and at at the top of the menu scroll to the itunes icon. What menu is this as I can't find the itunes menu. When I use the photo's or movies on my ipad I get the video and sound but when I use apps that did work with airplay a few weeks ago, now I only get the sound. I would sure appreciate any help you can give.

Thank you.

Not sure if this has been answered but i just recently had a problem that i could not see exactly what i saw on my iphone on my screen (as i thought apple tv would be able to do) .. To be able to do this.. Double tap the home button and slide to the left PAST the music tab and u will see a whole new airplay feature.. Turm mirroring on and your iphone screen will pop up on the tv

Hope this helps!
