AirPlay to Apple TV only sound and no picture to airplay option

Airplay is not working right for me or there is a setting I'm missing.

When I start a movie on my iPad or iPhone and I click the airplay icon it lets me choose between the device itself and the apple tv, however it only is for sound, no video.... Why? This is the same on the iPad and iPhone.

When I click on a picture I don't even get a airplay option at all. This is the same on both devices.

I don't see any setting for this either.

just to add to my post above, I am selecting the AirPlay icon on iPhone/iPad. I am clicking on AppleTV. Then I have to go to the AppleTV at the top of the menu and scroll up to the iTunes icons and I get (on the left) a generic icon which says untitled/unknown and when I click on that I get the sound without video. Something is wrong somewhere, must be me because this is way too awful for Apple to have released. Double checked that AirPlay is on on AppleTV. All are joined to my home network....

There is a free app called Remote. Get it from the app store. After its installed, you can either use it as a remote control for atv - but you can also access your shared library thru it. It's obvious how to do that when you see it ... It's basically the same as the COMPUTERS link on the atv. If you play any movies or music or anythingusing that shared library, you will get full audio and video from atv.

I think/hope I may have discovered the answer everyone are looking for. The reason I wanted AppleTV was to view what was on my iPad on my TV. I went to the Apple Store 2 times regarding Apple TV and have come to the conclusion that no one in the store is familiar with the product and I find myself explaining to them how it works. They give you their interpretation to the basic information they have been giving by Apple.

I have not tried this yet as I am at work and will try tonight. The Term you should search is Mirror rather than AirPlay. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4085 This will tell you how to turn on Mirroring Option in the AirPlay function. This should send the screen of the iPad 2 or iPhone 4/4S to the TV. I am not sure about the sound but I am hoping the Videos will now be visible. I hope this work and therefore, fixes all our issues.

The Apple Remote app allows you to control iTunes on the computer.

It does not display the shared library on the iPad.

It does on my iPad. When I open the Remote app, in the left pane, there are two options: AppleTV and "Isaac ....'s Library" If i select "Isaac ......'s Library" it displays exactly what is on iTunes on my mac, all categories (music, movie, even my playlists). If I select a movie, a song, a playlist, etc. it automatically plays thru AppleTV perfectly.

If you select AppleTV from the pane, it acts as a remote control for ATV.

You can view the library but you cannot play the shared library and view a movie on the iPad screen using the Remote app. That is what I meant.

Selecting the Shared library in the Remote app controls the computer just as selecting the AppleTV control the AppleTV.

Hi I read your post and had a question. You said to go into the appletv and at at the top of the menu scroll to the itunes icon. What menu is this as I can't find the itunes menu. When I use the photo's or movies on my ipad I get the video and sound but when I use apps that did work with airplay a few weeks ago, now I only get the sound. I would sure appreciate any help you can give.

Thank you.

Not sure if this has been answered but i just recently had a problem that i could not see exactly what i saw on my iphone on my screen (as i thought apple tv would be able to do) .. To be able to do this.. Double tap the home button and slide to the left PAST the music tab and u will see a whole new airplay feature.. Turm mirroring on and your iphone screen will pop up on the tv

Hope this helps!
