Video not working with Airplay

I've updated my iPhone and Apple TV and successfully set up Airplay for songs and photos (no thanks to you guys at Apple, had to resort to a Google search). But I have failed to get my home video from the camera roll to display on the TV. Has anyone any idea what could be the problem? I can't understand why I've been able to get it to work for the photos and songs, but no video! There is no Airplay icon displaying as an option when I switch to a video, whereas it's present when I view a photo.
Any help much appreciated!

Hi

I've got the exact same problem. I can play video to my Apple TV if it's in my iTunes library and I play it through iPod on my iPhone but not from the camera roll or events synced from my Mac.

Quite by chance a mate emailed me a video clip in MP4 format and when I play that on the iPhone it gives me the option to send it to the Apple TV. (Not actually done it yet as Mrs watching Corrie).

Is it a bug that it's not visible on camera roll video or was it not intended to work???

Synced everything up and when I press the "appletv" button on iPhone airplay it doesn't do anything, just kicks back to "iPhone". Sigh...I've had nothing but trouble streaming to this new appletv, even with my itunes library....very slow and unreliable...I even upgraded to the airport extreme and place an airport express on the same level of the house as the tv....doesn't make any difference. My house is small too.

Hello Jonty180,

I too had the same issue! At first, I thought it was a bug in iOS 4.2.1, but a quick read in the latest iPhone 4.2 User Guide reveals that viewing movies through your iPhone Photo album is not supported through AirPlay.

Currently, the only option is to connect using an AV cable. Perhaps a future iOS update will enable viewing movies through the iPhone Photo Library.

iPhone User Guide (For iOS 4.2 Software)

Viewing Photos, Videos, and Slideshows on a TV
You can view photos, videos, and slideshows on your TV by connecting iPhone to your TV or AV receiver with an AV cable.
Or, you can stream photos and slideshows wirelessly to your TV using AirPlay and Apple TV.

Hope this helps,

You're welcome Robert!

Once I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 and my Apple TV 2 to iOS 4.1, I turned both devices off and then rebooted them (usually recommended by Apple when installing any updated software and apps).

I did notice that the iPhone Photo Library needed to buffer a bit before they started streaming properly to the Apple TV 2. I'm able to view all of my Photo Libraries stored on the iPhone. Could it be that earlier iPhone revisions are experiencing the issue you describe?

True Zizzit, but to use the iPhone NetFlix app via Airplay, you would also have to bring along your Apple TV2 (and as you probably already know, it has NetFlix in the OS). Plus, you would also have to have both devices on a wifi network to work.

Even though your iPhone would be tethered directly to a television, using an AV cable eliminates bringing along your Apple TV2 and possibly paying for wifi service to link the devices when traveling.

Just a thought.

I noticed the same thing and am not happy we can't stream iPhone camera video directly via Airplay.

For display purposes, I imagine we can take that iphone video, bring it up in iMovie, export it to the 720p format, and then load it into iTunes. Not the best solution for "on the go viewing" but for me, it should work if I want to show home videos of my baby niece in the future.

I will try this myself at an earlier hour but I thought I would put it out there. Will update after I have tried it.

I absolutely agree with this post:

"This is extremely disappointing. The main reason I was waiting for Airplay on the iPhone was the ability to stream videos in my camera roll directly to my HDTV. I find Apple's marketing a little misleading on this one. Unbelievable the phone can't stream it's own native video!"

Add to this huge problem the problem of playing video from iPhoto and the reasons for having my new ATV2 just vanished! Really, what genius thought we wouldn't want to play videos from iPhoto? I import hundreds of photos and videos from my Canon S95 and two iPhone 4s each month and default import them all to iPhoto. I organize my events into daily folders named by date and I very much want my photos and related videos to appear together in iPhoto. THE LAST THING I WANT IS TO IMPORT IPHOTO VIDEOS TO ITUNES TO PLAY ON ATV2! Are they nuts?
