Video not working with Airplay

I've updated my iPhone and Apple TV and successfully set up Airplay for songs and photos (no thanks to you guys at Apple, had to resort to a Google search). But I have failed to get my home video from the camera roll to display on the TV. Has anyone any idea what could be the problem? I can't understand why I've been able to get it to work for the photos and songs, but no video! There is no Airplay icon displaying as an option when I switch to a video, whereas it's present when I view a photo.
Any help much appreciated!

I am also not able to stream videos from the camera roll to my Apple TV through Airplay. I thought this was the biggest selling point of Airplay. So I don't have to sync my iPhone to my computer, convert it to an Apple TV friendly format (this unnecessary conversion process is another topic). I want to be able to do it from camera roll.. Come on Apple. How on earth could you leave this feature out. I'm really ******

Using Airplay to view Video's taken on the iPhone on AppleTV is possible through the iOS iMovie application. It requires you to create and edit a project (which is something you would most likely want to do anyway). Once the project is done you can play it directly in the iMovie app and push it to AppleTV via Airplay. You can also export it to your camera roll for sync later but as discussed you cannot play it from there (currently)

I have the same problem as "Blind Guy" - playing the iMovie project from the main project window (not the edit mode), and I still get just audio. In fact, I had to export the video first in iMovie, but then stayed in the app and pushed the play button before the AirPlay symbol would come up. When I pushed it, the AirPlay symbol turned blue, and just audio came through the AppleTV2, no video.

Still bummed, but thanks for the suggestions.

I went into the iMovie app to reproduce what I did the other day and I can no longer get it working myself, audio only. I swear I had this working the other day after finding that I could not push from the Photo or Camera app as others have commented on. So either I'm crazy, or there was a specific series of event I went through that allowed it to work. I have tried everything I can think of in an effort to duplicate it. Having iTunes connected and not connected. Having the Remote App connected and not. Re-building Movies within iMovie etc. At this point, I too am open to suggestion. Sorry to get everyones hopes up but again, I swear this was working for me the other day. I am confident Apple will resolve this as the advantages of taking home video's while out with the iPhone 4 and coming home and watching them right away is brilliant, and there is no technical reason this would not work that I am aware of.

I am just adding my voice to the general discontent. Steve Jobs stated that Airplay was for streaming media including video. Assuming that we could stream iPhone video to apple tv is not unreasonable. Apple seems to have had a habit of under delivering latetly (iLife 11 anyone - that launched without calendar printing functionality and there was nothing new in 2 of the apps). It strikes me that Apple used to achieve everything with a small circle surrounding SJ and his managers. Is apple now trying to slachieve too much with too few people? Or are they just becoming another MS where announcing a feature does not mean delivering a feature. Airplay is a disappointment at best and AirPrint is a joke. I don't care if SJ says its coming, he has over promised and under delivered too much of late.

I have been reading this discussion on airplay and it's frustrating to hear all of the negative talk about it! Airplay does exactly what it is supposed to do. If you would take the time to research it a little bit (which, it sounds like most people only want to be spoon-fed by Apple itself...brainstorm...let's let them spend time developing more earth-shattering and incredible products instead of trying to spoon-feed all of the ignorant!) - I digress. If you knew anything about native video you would know that it is raw. The iphone 4 captures true, raw, 720p video (an amazing feat in itself that obviously many people are already taking purely for granted). Video that has been captured and run through imovie and sent to itunes in the Apple TV format has been crunched and the bit rate is perfect for streaming HD video over the air to the Apple TV without any (or rarely) a glitch. Therefore, it would be even more frustrating for you if Apple allowed your iphone 4 to stream directly to your Apple TV as is because there would be delays and buffering, etc. Do you really think that at the planning sessions for the team that developed Airplay they didn't think of this? That alone reveals the ignorance of most of the posts in this discussion regarding airplay. Of course they thought of it! Which is why, if you and the others in this post would be patient, you might just get exactly what you are hoping for with the release of 4.3 perhaps as early as December 13th.

timmachelms:

I agree that Apple has accomplished a number of great things with AirPlay, and credit where credit is due. What you are referring to as "negative talk" is simply the feeling of disappointment people felt when they realized they could not stream their recorded videos. Stating that people who voice their opinion on this are "ignorant" or that they need to be "spoon-fed" is a pretty harsh, though.

Most of the posts on the subject are written in an intelligent manner by people who simply feel that, if it were technically possible, the feature should have been included. Of course if Apple was able to do it in time for the AirPlay release, they would have. However, they didn't and I wish they would have simply put a small asterisk at the end of the statement about the streaming of video (e.g. *Video recorded with iPhone camera cannot currently be streamed. This is an upcoming feature, etc.)

I understand your frustration with posts that you consider to be critical of AirPlay, despite it's many positive and well-designed features. However, please keep in mind that just because an individual does not know that "native video is recorded in true, raw, 720p format" or what bit rate would produce acceptable streaming quality, it does not make them ignorant. These forums are called "Support Discussions" for a reason.

I'm not trying to start a flame-war, seriously. I just think it's a good practice to only post something that you would be willing to say to somebody in person.

cheers, jjw

True raw 720p video? Well not really.

Obviously this is a marketing issue as most people came away from watching Apples ads with the impression that video streaming would be available.
