If after you update to 4.2 your iPod app seems to be devoid of media...

...I may have an odd solution.

After updating to 4.2, my iPod app was empty, but in iTunes all of my music, podcasts, and video appeared to still be on my iPhone. I disconnected my iPhone and restarted it. The iPod app was still empty. I reconnected it to my Mac and iTunes still showed the media. Then out of curiosity I selected a song on my iPhone in iTunes and hit play. The music started playing on my Mac and my iPhone lit up with the 'syncing' message for half a second. I reopened the iPod app on my iPhone and for a second or two it displayed the 'updating library' message. All of my media was there.

Just FYI.

32GB Black iPhone 4+3.06GHz 17-inch MacBook Pro 8GB - 500GB@7200 - Antiglare -, Mac OS X (10.6), - I want .mac back as an email option for MobileMe.

only a few songs are on my iphone after this update all my other music is showing up under purchased how can i gwt it back on my iphone

All my "media" vanished , but played a song in Itunes and hit sync and walla its all there
I also do manage my my own music . Hope this helps

Faced the same issue and got it cleared through the same steps specified,mine is an iphone 3gs 32gb factory unlocked.

I have this issue too. Only found out at work, when I was dying for a song. Have to wait to reach home to solve it. Also with iOS4.2 the performance of my 3G iPhone is still at an annoyingly low level

That fix sounds great, and I am sure it works. But I updated to 4.2 just before leaving for Thanksgiving. No media message. - tried
1. soft and hard (hold the top button until the iphone turns off) reboots - neither worked.
2. Tried downloading a podcast - unable to view new podcast - didn't work either.

Now, I have no way to listen to music in my car or on walks this whole weekend. I guess I will just hum and talk to people.

Thanks, gang, for the troubleshooting. Playing a tune worked for me, after a played it and then started playing off my library again. The phone flashed a sync screen and fixed itself. Whew! I've got a long flight home Sunday, and no tunes would be a PITA!

Either you're lucky, or we're unlucky. Neither changes the facts. For the record, I also had the problem and the fix described above did the trick.

My podcast are gone! And I downloaded a new podcast and it downloaded but does not show up.
Now I wonder if this will happen everytime a podcast is downloaded and it will not show until hooked to the beast and syncked.
This a major boo boo by apple. Many updated the os and went on their way only to discover later that all media had been trashed. A lot of people won't have access to their pc or mac for awhile. Especially if you updated and jumped on a plane for the holiday. Im really shocked apple let this HUGE MAJOR BUG slip by.

I've had the same problem with missing media - with the added complication of...my music will not play in iTunes from the iPhone in the device list

therefore the "fix" doesn't work for me

any other ideas?

Just wanted to add myself to the list of people with this problem. iPod 3rd Gen, manual syncing and appeared to loose all music following update. Not good enough Apple - remember that 'it just works' should be the mantra, not 'it just works after you search fora solution and do a tweek'.

I swear to god this is the last time I blindly update my iPhone without researching it first. Don't know yet if any of these solutions work since I'm not near my Mac. Yeah, a useless, gripey post, but Apple deserves it.
