If after you update to 4.2 your iPod app seems to be devoid of media...

...I may have an odd solution.

After updating to 4.2, my iPod app was empty, but in iTunes all of my music, podcasts, and video appeared to still be on my iPhone. I disconnected my iPhone and restarted it. The iPod app was still empty. I reconnected it to my Mac and iTunes still showed the media. Then out of curiosity I selected a song on my iPhone in iTunes and hit play. The music started playing on my Mac and my iPhone lit up with the 'syncing' message for half a second. I reopened the iPod app on my iPhone and for a second or two it displayed the 'updating library' message. All of my media was there.

Just FYI.

The real problem is us folks who are manually managing our music.

What'll happen is:

- Copy some music onto iPhone
- Open iPod.app
- The music you just copied doesn't show up.

Now, the play-then-sync fix in this thread will indeed fix it, but you need to do it *every time* you do a round of copying music to the iPhone.

What a royal pain in the rear.

This happened to me. I was a bit nervous and tried several things to fix it, but from what I could tell it was fixed when I did a second sync.

FYI, I use an iPhone4, and manually manage my music in iTunes. Also, my podcasts also appeared to be missing when this happened.

And yes, if we have to do this every time we add new content, this will get old fast, as I put new podcasts on my phone every day.

I am having a similar problem on the iPad except my music is there in the Music and Podcast lists but my smart playlists are empty. See:

Had same issue. Nice job apple. Re-boot then resync fix worked for me, didnt have to play a song.

I was disapointed that 4.2 didnt have more to it, we still need a night (silence everything but phone) mode etc.

I am having the same problem, and so far nothing has worked. I am now resetting my phone using the two buttons and will then try to sync again. Very frustrating to say the least.

No luck! Any other ideas?

That doesn't happen with me. I just dragged a song over, then opened the iPod app and there it was.

Yes, I manually manage my music.

After calling Apple, the tech had me make a new playlist and repopulate it then sync and all is back to normal. The playlist became corrupt on 4.2.1 install. If you are having problems call tech and inform them that a fix for the problem is needed.

Was that a regular playlist or a smart playlist? I tried recreating my smart playlist but it didn't help. Works on my iphone4 running 4.2.1, just not my iPad.

Note on the iPad. I have lost all of my application data after upgrading to 4.2.1. Penultimate Notebooks, Todo Tasks, Whistle Account Data, Contacts, Email, GoodReader Data, pictures, music, game data, and iPad Settings.

- Initial sync to restore the data after the upgrade results in the device locking up along with iTunes locking up.
Trying to restore from a previous backup also causes the device to lock up. I guess I have lost my important data...Unless I downgrade.

I had the exact same issue with my iPhone 4 after the update. The fix discussed in this thread worked flawlessly for me; I simply played a song on my iPhone through iTunes and the songs reappeared on my iPhone. Cheers!

I can not connect my Iphone 4 to my car, till yeasterday all was working. Now I have no music and the display shows "no connection". do anyone has idea what to do???

Had the same problem mentioned - upgraded the iPhone from 4.1 to 4.21, let the upgrade/itunes complete, disconnected, started iPod App and nothing was available. Rebooted the iPhone - still did not work.

This is what worked for me:

1. reconnected the iPhone to iTunes
2. Sync'd
3. disconnected

Worked.

do you have a clue why this is not working on my Iphone?
I have Ipod and all the music on my Iphone, but I can not play the tunes on the car stereo. With 4.1 that was possible.
I also checked my old Ipod classic and it is working in the car.
