How to save add to homescreen & notes before update

Subject line says it all. I just want to make sure that before I update to iOS 4.2.1 that all my notes and home screen bookmarks are saved to my Mac running 10.6.2 in a plain text file form if at all possible.

When you hookup your iPad to iTunes, after the backup is complete, go to your notes and bookmarks and they are still there, you should be ok to update your iPad. Even if you have a problem updating the iPad and have to do a restore your notes and bookmark will still be there. Just pick the option to restore from backup.

I had a problem during the update on my iPad to where I had to do a restore. I restored from my backup and everything (including home screen bookmark and notes) transferred to the iPad.

Unfortunately, my problem is the only place I can see the actual Home Screen bookmark is on the iPad.
Say for some reason, I want to see the Home Screen bookmarks on my computer there does not appear to be a facility to do that. Even if it does theoretically restore them I have to take it on faith, without seeing the actual backup file on my computer.

Unfortunately I have 100+ home screen bookmarks, since navigating the Safari bookmarks is so much more difficult on the iPad. That's why I need some way to back them up before I upgrade. I wish there was some way to do this.

Performing a backup is a part of the upgrade process, and those "home page bookmarks" are saved right along with your settings and other data; they will reappear right along with everything else.
If you're asking whether they can be sync'ed in some manner, and make it into iTunes and onto your system in that way, then no, I don't think you can do that.

So in other words, the only way to physically use the home screen bookmarks on the iPad is to use the iPad? There is no way to copy some xml file contents with those bookmarks onto the computer for purposes of backing up? There is no way of making the home screen bookmarks into obvious apps with a specific link that goes to pages on the Mac for purposes of backing up? As it stands, iTunes sees the apps, but the only evidence that the bookmarks are there, is the "syncing bookmarks" in the main syncing header. I don't see the actual links to those homescreen bookmarks anywhere on my Mac. I want some sort of guarantee that when I sync the contents of the synced home screen bookmarks will reappear on a new iPad, if my iPad should somehow fail.

You want a guarantee? Then back up your iPad, early and often. The process appears to be a lot quicker, and much less painful, in the new OS.

You will eventually have to get your brain around the idea that the iPad simply is not a "MacBook Lite"; it has no Finder or other file-handling system which exists outside the various apps and doesn't have the flexibility which you're looking for.

The reason you don't see anything relating to your various bookmarks is that they will exist on your main system nowhere except in your backup file. If you want to pull them out then you'll have to play around inside that file itself, but I have no idea if you'll find anything recognizable or usable.

A short-term solution might be to see whether any of the other browsers handle bookmark storage better than the stripped Safari we now have; if so, you could eventually get switched over to using that. Longer term, perhaps requests to Apple, via the iPad feedback forms, to improve how Safari handles them could pay some dividends.
