Mute Button not Muting

Don't know if this has already been discussed. I for one do not like where the new mute button is. Moreover, the mute feature does not mute for any type of video play. What gives?

I agree that it should be able to be set the switch to either function in settings. I can see that muting alerts etc may be of use (although it's just as simple to mute all as it's unlikely you're going to listen to music etc in a lecture / meeting anyway) but I would prefer the easier access to a screen rotation lock that we had previously. I find I often end up lying on my side, watching film / on the net and it is annoying to move slightly and see the screen rotate. I know you can lock it through double clicking etc, it's just not as convenient for me, just as others find the mute by holding inconvenient - just give us a choice.

I don't completely disagree, but it has never been an issue with the 50 million iPhone/iPodTouches. So why is this suddenly an issue now for the iPad? The 4.2 functionality is identical to the iPhone.

"mute all" is different than mute notifications

but I would prefer the easier access to a screen rotation lock that we had previously.

Very well, and that is your opinion.

I find I often end up lying on my side, watching film / on the net and it is annoying to move slightly and see the screen rotate.

As do I. But seriously, how often do you have to change the orientation while watching a movie?

I know you can lock it through double clicking etc, it's just not as convenient for me,

Again, very well, and that is your opinion. It is just a convenient for me, and I even have access to the brightness in the same place.

just as others find the mute by holding inconvenient -

Not the same thing.

just give us a choice.

Like I said, I don't disagree with the choice argument, but it's just not going to happen. Especially not here in the message boards. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ would be the best way to let Apple know of your displeasure with the change.

Yes, you're right. A question was asked, I answered it. The response to that answer was flame bait directed towards me. So I'm a troll.

When you're a member here for more than a day, then you can complain about trolls. Until then, accept the original, correct answer, and leave it at that. Don't complain that you don't agree with it. That's not what these boards are for. They are a public support forum. If you don't like the feature that was added, go let Apple know at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad

They do not administer these boards and will never know that you are unhappy with the change.

This should obviously be a user configurable setting because even Apple can't decide which option they prefer. It should also default to orientation lock because 4+ million users already expect it to work like that.

MLadd, if you are going to reprimand someone for using the term "everyone" you can hardly then continue by claiming to know the views of "a majority of users".

Reprimand? You guys have some pretty thin skin.

Whatever. It's your way, or the highway. Everyone else is wrong, but you. Apple has no idea what they are doing, but you know what's best for everyone. Anyone who does not agree with you, is a fan boy and will go along with anything Apple says. You claim to speak for ALL the users, and yet, you only speak for yourself.

Very well. I have said my piece. I answered the question. You don't like the answer. You think I'm the issue. I didn't program the device. Go let Apple know.

ok, i see the reasons why Apple has changed the buttons and rocker.
Now that i see the reasons and i have used it myself, they are wrong for making the change as the unit was better before this change to me (and seemingly many other people).

Sometimes these updated features just are not better.

while watching a movie, i occasionally rotate by accident, so instead of just flipping the switch, i have to now open the task bar each time i wanna change this......... not even close to as convenient as just flipping the switch.......... yes, people can get over it, but it was better before.

Wow!

Perhaps they, like me, read Apple's documentation and thought that they knew what it meant! To quote from Apple's document 'iPad User Guide for iOS 4.2 Software':

*) The button is indicated as 'Silent' (via a small line)
*) The description below says "Mute the sound - Slide the Silent button up to mute the sound; slide it down to unmute the sound."

Well, that sounds pretty much like it will mute the sound, does it not? In fact when sliding the switch up an icon briefly flashes onto the screen showing the speaker sound icon with a line drawn through it - well, that looks like a volume mute indicator to me ...

And just out of interest, how do you know that it's intended to mute system notifications and alert sounds only. It doesn't say that it in the User Guide and I can't find it in a Tech Note. Is there a link to an Apple Tech Note which states this or are you simply stating what it actually does, which may or may not be what Apple planned?
