Interesting discussion... Frankly, I think the mute function of the switch is BROKEN. Why? Because in the system settings the word "mute" is selected. Not mute some things but not other things unless it's a game and then only on weekends or whatever. If Apple wants its devices to be simple enough to use without a manual then system settings should do what they say next to the switch. Mute means NO SOUND to me. I know I am not the only person who might think this way; no way am I dim-witted enough to claim everyone feels the same way about ANYTHING. If that switch setting doesn't mute then it should state what it does do. And that action should be consistent across the device as it is located in system settings. And as for the people who say these boards should be helpful and not critical I have this point to make to the original poster: you are correct, the mute function of the external switch doesn't mute all sound, only some sounds some of the time. It silences most system-related sounds but typically has no effect on things playing music or video. It is mislabeled in the settings dialog and this needs to be addressed promptly by Apple to make it easier for users to understand exactly what the switch really does.
Just found this discussion on the iPad Mute Button, and have to add my opinion.
We made an app for a customer that plays videos. When the user mutes the iPad with the mute button, the sound of the videos is off, when he unmutes the iPad, the sound is on. Well, that is exactly what i expect it to be.
BUT, whe the user mutes his iPad and plays a video over the website the sound i s ON???? Furthermore if he starts the YouTube App and watches a video, the sound is also ON. What the F*ck???
So some people say that the sound of the videos in our app don´t work, because they have their iPad always muted without recognising it.
How TF shall i explain this to our customer?
This solution for the mute button is so unapple, Steve Jobs would fire you all for that.
If mute, the MUTE!!!, if not, then NOT!!! Everything else is completely unlogic.
The side switch is 'notification mute', it's not a 'mute everything' button, it doesn't mute the Music or Videos apps nor does it affect headphones e.g. if you are watching a film on your iPad in the Videos app you can use the switch prevent notification sounds interrupting it. To mute verything press and hold the volume down switch.
Hi King_Penguin!
Thanks a lot for your answer. I think the problem we have is that our videos DO respond to the mute button, while they actually shouldn´t. I will give this information to our programmer. Cause when you hear our videos on mute, then the app behaves like the other apps.
Thank you so far.
