My findings - AirPrint & HP 8500a Plus

Contrary some news reports that I have seen, iOS 4.2 will not to print to the HP 8500a Plus via AirPrint; however, a HP representative informed me that the 8500a does support the AirPrint protocol, Apple has simply not enabled it yet.

I just bought the 8500a and I love it, so I am going to hang onto it with hopes that Apple will soon support it. I don't know that I want to mess with a third party solution (ie. PrintCentral), I think I would rather just wait for native support.

Lotharon,

Thanks for the additional tip. I sometimes miss that first step because I do it all the time, UI's change between devices, and UI's change every year. It makes it a challenge keeping everything straight.

Special paper sizes are restricted to tray #1. So you put legal size format paper to tray #2.

The problem: AirPrint is restricted to legal paper AND tray #1.

So your telling me that the officejet 8500 A909G which is just over a year old can't have it's firmware changed to enable air print? I find that ridiculously hard to believe.

I wasn't going to buy the printer in the first place because of HP's history of screwing customers over, now I'm really regretting it. I will never purchase another HP product.

Yours may be just over a year old, but the design is older than that. Were the engineers supposed to anticipate (crystal ball maybe) ePrint and AirPrint? I would imagine yours has a completely different logic board, processor and firmware.
