As other have said, the mute switch works exactly like it's supposed to. It disables the notification sounds just like it does on the iPhone. When the iPhone "mute" switch is on you can still play music.

Then it is a waste to those who have notifications turned off anyways. Why not put the option to mute the notification sounds in the settings menu where the notification settings are?

Well said! The "mute" notifications switch should be a settings preference not a vitally important hardware button. The loss of the hardware screen rotation lock is a horrible mistake. Has anyone created a hack to fix this broken kludge in 4.2? When I'm moving the orientation of the device is NOT when I want to double click the home button and slide a task bar. Jobs what were you thinking?

Because for some people it makes more sense to not have to unlock the device, go to settings, then notifications, then turn off notifications, when it should just be a flip of a switch. Just like the last poster explained, it's identical to how the iPhone mute works.

There is no need to use the orientation lock while the device is not in use, so there is no need to have a hardware button for it.

Rotation lock is something I use all the time.... often while I have a PDF open that may not be oriented the same way as the iPad. You used to be able to hold the iPad the way you wanted the document oriented and flip the switch. Now instead of flipping the switch I have to double-click the home button, scroll left, and click the lock button.

This is not user-friendly.

There is already an easy way to mute the iPad via a hardware switch.

I dont' get this. You open a document that is in landscape, and it won't change to portrait? I don't understand how rotation locking helps this issue of how the document is formatted. If you don't change the orientation, you don't have to lock the orientation. If you are constantly changing the orientation, you lock the one that you wish. This is a one second resolution to a .5 second issue.

Perhaps for some, it may not be.

How do you mute notifications with a hardware switch? You have to go to multiple settings panes in order to mute all of the notifications without the switch.

For example... you have a PDF that is portrait oriented, but the iPad thinks it's supposed to be landscape (happens all the time)... or a document that is landscape, but the iPad shows it to you upside down. In a group setting where the iPad is passed around and documents are being examined being able to quickly re-rotate-lock is a huge benefit. Instead now we have to double click, swipe and click?

Let me ask you this.. how often do you really get notification messages that it's so bothersome and ruins listening to music? Does it warrant changing a hardware switch from something that a lot of people found really useful to something that helps avoid being annoyed for .1 seconds every 4 songs?

Why not put the notification mute on the task bar instead? After all it only takes 1 second as you pointed out, and you'd only need to do it once for the entire time you're sitting there listening to music.

EDIT: I've also been dealing with a lot of architectural plans and drawings, and the document may be portrait oriented, but you might want to look at different parts of the drawing from different directions.... having to go through the menu several times just to re-lock the screen is a pain.

Hundreds of times a day. Literally.

Yes. It actually can be damaging if you are using headphones.

So that notifications can be turned off without having to unlock the device.

I see your point about blueprints. But that is (so far) the only example that makes sense to me to continually use screen locking. You are the only person that has brought a real work example where this causes an issue.
