Upgrade to iOS 4.2 1013 error

Upgrading to iOS 4.2 but keeping getting unknown error 1013. This then takes the phone into Recovery Mode needing a Restore and Update. Have tried this a number of time (and followed the support page from Apple) but to no avail. Anyone else managed to resolve this?

For what it's worth, that used to work for me in iTunes 9.1.1.12, now in iTunes 10.1.2.17 for Win, I need to have the file I wish to restore in the same place as it gets put when you download it with iTunes. Namely:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates (this is on my machine, yours may be a little different). Hope this helps someone!

Hey,

My iphone 3GS went weird on me the other day it was running iOS 4.2.1, however is now just an ibrick! I tried to restore using itunes however I always get error 1013!
-There are no entry's regarding gs.apple.com in my host file
-I have never jailbroken/ tampered with my iphone before
-The restore always stops when it is about 99% complete on the iphone bar
-I've tried different computers OSX and windows (7/vista/xp)
-I tried TinyUmbrella, but it won't let me click on the enter/exit recovery buttons, and I don't have a SHSH as i've never installed the program before so have never saved it from my device.
-I've tried both recovery mode and DFU mode
-I've tried kicking it out using the normal iphone buttons to get it out but to no avail.

Please help! I can't do anything with my iphone at the moment as it's permanently stuck in recovery mode and as far as i can see it has nothing to do with the gs.apple.com host fix.

Thanks!!

I see that you write after first progress bar to remove the line. I tried that an no success. Is there a video tutorial on this?

It wont verify iphone if that gs.apple.com isnt there and then it will give the 1013 error. i am lost as to where you remove the line. Does it matter if I put a # in front of it or does it have to be completely removed?

Thank you so much.

I trawled every post and tried everything with no avail.
The first half of your instructions worked a treat for me.
I am currently waiting for my phone to Synch.

Would you believe that I spent two hours on the phone with second level support (apple) and they couldn't fix it??
Their resolution was "make an appointment to see a Genius, you may also need a new phone!"

I'm calling them back tomorrow and referring them to this thread.

Thanks to all who have contributed thus far.

Thought you folks would like to know that I finally fixed my iphone recovery mode 1013 error. I learned that their are two gs.apple.com servers. I found out which server I was connecting to and decided to try the other server. I added the below entry in my hosts files. I did a recovery and it worked. NOW, what on earth is going on with apple gs.apple.com server 17.112.176.11? gs.apple.com 17.151.36.30 worked for me. Keep in mind, my phone is a normal stock phone with only apple store apps. my phone is not gail broken and I do not use tiny umbrella or related utilities.Problems began with the release prior to the current one.
