WiFi/Internet Incredibly slow after iOS 4.2 Upgrade

My wifi is incredibly slow after I upgraded two of the three iPads in my home to iOS 4.2. The other iPad that has not been upgraded works fine. In a side by side test loading the same web page, the iOS 4.2 iPad takes 5x as long. Any ideas on why this would happen?

I hope someone from Apple is reading this stuff because by reporting these issues we are all trying to help to narrow down the problem.

Ok get this. I have a 2nd gen iPod which i also updated to 4.2. It plays the same station on TuneIn Radio over the same wifi connection without a problem.

What's different about the 2g iPod? No multitasking. Don't know if that helps or not. Maybe this is just an iPad 4.2 issue? Anyway, just thought I'd report it. Could iPad multitasking be messing with the wifi software somehow?

You don't know that until you've tried it. It's up to you, since it's your system, but a full restore is a well-documented method of fixing a wide range of issues. This isn't aimed at you, so please don't think I'm having a go - it's a general observation - I'm always a bit surprised by how many people go for a downgrade before trying a ful restore. I can see that there's the confidence of using a version that worked before, but downgrading forces a full restore anyway

I would ofcourse do a restore before downgrading - I was just saying I reckoned downgrade was more likely to work (but not what I'd do). I know restoring fixes a lot of stuff, but I really don't think it'll help - I think this is a coding bug, not something corrupt in my OS, so I don't want to waste the time trying 🙂

Well. I see that I am not alone with my wifi post 4.2 upgrade woes.

Sounds like a lot of us are suffering with wifi issues since the upgrade. It's depressing . Takes me 28 seconds to start up the ipad now, and 7 seconds to bring up USA today. 28 seconds too boot up? I assume thats wifi related or is a symptom of a larger problem?? Dang I hope APPLE addresses this SOON!

Even though I said I wasn't going to chase this problem any more in an earlier post, I went ahead and did a complete restore. No change - what a waste of time. I got impatient after downloading Slingplayer for iPad today. Even though I knew performance was going to suffer under iOS 4.2, I downloaded it anyways. The new Slingplayer app has a great feature inside its aspect ratio menu where you can watch the data rate. Without fail I get an excellent quality data stream from my Slingbox. However, with iOS 4.2, I watched the data rate go from full stream, down to nothing, jump up and down; it was all over the place.

This wifi issue reminds me of when I bought my MacBook Pro a few years back. After starting it up I immediately applied all of the software updates. However, little did I know that in one of the more recent updates, Apple had messed up some of the code which rendered the wifi on my brand new MacBook Pro unusable using OS 10.4. Lucky for me I was setting it up as a duel boot system using Boot Camp and was able to access wifi on the Windows XP side of the machine. I tried everything to fix the problem with no success. There was a huge discussion on here about the problem. If my memory serves me correctly, I took about a month before an OS patch came out that fixed the problem. I don't recall Apple ever acknowledging a problem or that a patch was issued.

With my MacBook Pro I had options to keep the computer a functional unit without wifi on the Mac side of the machine. However, with the iPad it's a completely different story; wifi is a critical function of the unit. Like I said in my earlier post, I've been down this road before. I know Apple will address this problem, but it sure has ruined the great product experience I have had so far.

Here is my troubleshooting chronology...

Device: 16GB WiFi iPad
Router: Apple Airport Extreme (I never tweaked/reset my router in my testing)
Other router: HTC Incredible mobile hotspot

1. Restore (not update) from 3.2.2 to 4.2.1, and apply a backup to bring in all my settings/apps/music.
- Result: Slow internet (Safari painfully slow and Hulu Plus unable to maintain a video stream, but speed test apps showing ~3 MBPS download)
2. Restore 4.2.1, and apply a backup to bring in all my settings/apps/music.
- Result: same as above
3. Reset all network settings on the iPad
- Result: same as above
4. Restore 4.2.1, but not apply any backups
- Result: same as above
5. Downgrade to 3.2.2, and apply a backup to bring in all my settings/apps/music.
- Result: Internet works great

Why hasnt anyone from apple responded to to this thread? What's the point? Are we just talking to ourselves? Seems like it.

These boards are user-to-user, and Apple doesn't participate directly, so in fact we are just talking to ourselves

There's a feedback to Apple iPad page at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

If you're having issues with other wifi devices, it sounds like a router problem. Any chance you could have 2 devices competing as DHCP servers?

The same for me, I upgraded both one iPhone (and it is great) and one iPad that is a blame:
- wifi is very slow (I'm using the last time capsule) speed test is showing 1,2 mps while iPhone is going at 12,5mps. I'm unable to play any internet html5 video; when I load a page very oten it stops for a while...
- airplay is not working sometimes and sometimes it see the apple tv 2 but only as speakers (playng video)
- iPad sometime freezes it seems windows vista!!!!

How can I go back to 3.2.1?

Yep, ditto here. The iphone4 upgraded fine, but the iPAD has been hit with unworkable Wi-fi since the upgrade to 4.2.1 - it's only a week old as well (the iPad).. It's definitely not a router problem - I have tried this with Netgear, D-Link & Cisco routers and stil the same issue (while the iPhone & laptop work fine over the same connection). Mine is a 3G+WiFi, and there were also issues with the 3G part as well (I have a SIM in there but no contract) - it was causing failure messages in iTunes once it had been upgraded when clicking the "check for updates".

so the symptoms seem to be:
- very slow connection when attached to Wifi (but connects to the SSID fine)
- no response to a ping of the IP Addr
- even putting a 192.1.68.1.1 into Safari to get to the router login times out
- after a shutdown/restart, works well for about 3-4 minutes then after this it is unusable.

It's definitely an iPAD problem (I'm a network engineer so I'm pretty good at this stuff) and not a router problem.
So unless someone can let me know quickly how to fix this in the next couple of days, it's going back to the Genius in the Westfield Centre Apple shop for a refund on Saturday ....

I just dont believe Apple, my wifi is so slow, all the delays and what do we get? BAD service yet again.

Does anyone form Apple read these comments?
I dont see may replies from them.

Come on Apple and Mr Jobs, you take our hard earned cash from your products but as usual gives very little back in return... not even a reply.

Taking a deep breath, I dare to say that the problem seems to be with contexts. My iPad works almost flawlessly at numerous place: home, Panera, a local pub, airports, even the Mexican bus company in Hermosillo Mexico. However, i lose my connection and suffer all the problems that have been described here at my work place where I need it for controlling Keynote presentations since the Keynote Remote for iPhone does work on iPad. Ican't offer advice on how to fix your particular problems. I can't even fix mine. But I am having trouble blaming it on the iPad.

One thing I do not understand is that my MacBook Pro and my iPhone connect flawlessly over the network at my workplace. Can't say why the one and not the other.

Apple does not respond here - this is a user-to-user facility. You can leave feedback for them at
