WiFi/Internet Incredibly slow after iOS 4.2 Upgrade

My wifi is incredibly slow after I upgraded two of the three iPads in my home to iOS 4.2. The other iPad that has not been upgraded works fine. In a side by side test loading the same web page, the iOS 4.2 iPad takes 5x as long. Any ideas on why this would happen?

Wow, this is so surreal 🙂

We've already seen a small number of people were able to fix their WiFi issues with changing settings etc. Clearly there's more than one problem. Looks like 4.3 has solved some problems (including those we didn't know even notice!), but maybe not all.

My suggestion to these people (like Philly - this is me being helpful, again, but this post has no "Mark as helpful" option, which is why I don't have fanboi stripes like you) is return their iPads to the store for replacements, as it seems to be the easiest way to get something resolved with Apple.

Philly_Phan,
At this point, your role here seems purely disruptive. All you seem to be interested in is pointing out some imagined discrepancy in other people's posts. As DanTup said, it's almost surreal for you to criticize others for downplaying people's legitimate claims. Obviously, this is exactly what you've been doing for months. You're just trying to play games now.

Maybe you are expressing indirect remorse for your behavior in this discussion?

Then again, I give you credit for sticking your neck back in here. Your fellow deniers seem to have gone into hiding since the iOS 4.3 update.

Thanks,
Matthew

Philly_Phan,
Can you explain how I have "dismissed" anyone?

My point in the past couple of days has been to point out that -- clearly -- there was a major WiFi bug in iOS 4.2 that is made all the more evident by the WiFi improvements in 4.3.

Now, anyone still experiencing problems in iOS 4.3 should continue to post and seek solutions. Hopefully, we can help them.

Clearly, It is you who has a long history in this discussion of dismissing any claims that there was a bug in iOS 4.2. You went to great lengths to make it seem as though the WiFi issues must be the router, the software, the location, or any number of other things -- essentially anything except an iOS 4.2 bug. You even childishly mocked those of us who used the term "bug."

By contrast, myself and a couple of others constantly sought to legitimize people's problems, emphasize Apple's responsibility, and offer best-faith solutions.

This is all pretty clear to anyone who has been following this discussion. It should establish your reputation from this point forward.

Thanks,
Matthew

I have high speed Internet cable service with all my devices, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, two iPhones and an iPad connected by wifi to my Airport Extreme, dual band version. With the computers I get almost the exact same download and upload speeds over the wifi network as I do connected directly to the modem. However for quite a while now the mobile devices were horribly slow. I changed channels on the router, I set the iPad to connect to the 5N frequency, all to no avail. I was chalking it up to interference from surrounding wifi networks in my neighborhood but couldn't understand why the mobile devices would be so badly affected while the computers weren't at all. Then BAM 4.3 comes out and the phones and iPad suddenly have consistently fast connections. The difference is like night and day. Just hope I'm not jinxing it by posting this! I don't know if my issues were the same as what's been discussed here but there definitely has been a change for the better.

Fantastic!

I've been away from this thread for a while, the Phillyanthropy got a bit tiring for me. Its great to see Apple finally appear to have fixed the fundamental bug or bugs that many of us have had the misfortune and major frustration of experiencing with 4.2. Still a pity they didn't have the b.a.l.l.s to acknowledge the issue publically (or at least on the forums).

I'm downloading 4.3 now and look forward to seeing the results on my IPad. I'll post back once i've done that.

Philly you really need to get over yourself mate. You're just embarrassing to yourself and your fellow Apple fanatics.

I'll concede one thing to the Sock Puppets on this thread - Apple managed to keep this glaring problem largely under the media radar for months. Maybe with their small (and one would hope, self-appointed) role here denying, dismissing, deflecting and trying to marginalize new posters here they successfully contributed to the cause.

I'm just happy to have my iPad (and iPhone) back with useable wifi. It was too expensive to be just a gaming toy for the kids. And Airplay, now that it works, is a sweet sweet thing!

Some people have reported an improvement in network speeds with 4.3 vs. 4.2.1. I personally haven't seen any difference. Here are some Speedtest results:

4.2.1.
Download - 20.82 Mbps.
Upload - 2.13 Mbps.
Ping - 89 ms

4.3
Download - 20.85 Mbps.
Upload - 1.95 Mbps.
Ping - 90 ms

You must have a very high speed connection. I'm still thinking I am experiencing some interference from nearby networks so my download speeds have never been as fast on my mobile devices as on my computers, some of that difference could be due to the type of tests that are used on the different devices. However I had always gotten similar results on other wifi networks that had wifi network speeds comparable to mine. However prior to this newest update my results were absolutely horrible most of the time, almost equivalent to my old dial up connection. Occasionally the results would be what I expected which would confuse me.

Somehow, and maybe I'm imagining this, I think there has been some change in how the devices deal with the interference of nearby networks. At least that's the theory I'm going on because since the update my wifi performance on these devices has consistently been just what I expect. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, for now I'm quite happy.

Using my iPad used to be a very enjoyable experience, but now it's an exercise in patience. I am tired of wasting my time chasing this problem, it won't be corrected until Apple releases an update.

The original statement I made above on Nov. 23, 2010, on page two of this thread, ultimately proved correct in my particular situation. After upgrading to iOS 4.3 and testing it extensively over the last several days, i can confidently say my iPad is back to the same wonderful device I enjoyed using on iOS 3.2. It's a shame that some users lost faith and abandoned the iPad before a fix could be released. They're really missing out on how great the iPad can be when it works as originally designed.
