Airplay from iPhone to Airport Express - no sound?
We have two of the new Mac Minis, one new Airport Express and 4 iPhones in the house - and we can use Airplay from both PC´s to the Airport Express hooked up to the stereo - works fine!
And we can se the Airplaybutton on the iPhones and the name of the Airport Express - but we don´t get any sound when we push the button and it turns blue?
We have rebooted alle the devices, made restores, reconnected - but no sound? I just don´t get it?
When I installed 4.2 on my iPhone 4, it worked flawlessly with my AE 6.3 at first. However, when I went to work and got back, I could not select my AE anymore. However, when I reboot my iPhone WHILE being on the WIFI network, I get back the airplay functionality.
I can stream to it via Airplay from both my PCs. I can stream from my Ipod touch gen2, but I can not stream from Ipad. The Airplay icon is visible, I can select it but it will only play for a second or so before it quits.
Did you check if you have the same Router IP in settings/WiFi for the PC`s and iPod and maybe not for the iPad?
My router sends out multiple IP´s and the iPhones, iPads etc. needs to be on the same IP-address for the streaming to work - just like the Homesharing of the PC/Macs for the Remote app. to work.
I saw your earlier posts, so yes I did check that. However, all devices had the correct ip settings, that is not the problem in this case. I will check out the suggestion by leverything to revert to factory settings and then reset to previous settings.
My initial test was using the Airport Express (7.4.2) in stand-alone mode (create wireless network). This worked perfectly with my iPhone & iTunes (10.1)
Second test was to join my Airport Express to my TimeCapsule (7.4.2) via "Join a wireless network". This worked for iTunes, but not for iPhone.
Third test was to join my Airport Express to my TimeCapsule via "Extend a wireless network". This worked for iTunes, but not for iPhone.
After playing around rebooting all devices, no luck. Then realised I'd got the "Allow this network to be extended" setting on my TimeCapsule turned off. Turned this on, rebooted, now all fine.
I have an older Airport Express plugged up to the wall outlet and a audio cable to my stereo and my iphone g3s dont work on Airplay, but it sees the airport on the wi-fi settings on my iphone. My G5 computer does not have a Airport card. Do I need my computer to have a Airport Card?? Im assuming that the Airport is just a wireless server and it will stream from the iphone to the Airport, Right??? or do I have something wrong. Well any way my Airplay does not work on my G3s iPhone.
If you open your airport utility, somewhere in the settings is a checkbox for 'allow airport over ethernet' or something like that (I can't check at work). That should allow your G5 with no airport to play to your stereo over 'wired' airport. HTH.
Doesn't work for me. I've managed to get the Airport Express to play Airplay from my iPhone if I make it a network of its own, and not connected through my Time Capsule. There seems to be some kind of bridging problem.
I am having no luck at all...I can stream from my Mac to Airport Express but i cannot stream any sound from iPad to AE. I have tried doing it from YouTube, and I have tried playing songs on the iPod on my iPad to the AE using Airplay, and that will not work either...
I to am unable to play music via Airplay from any of my iOS devices to my old model (g only) Airport Express (firmware 6.3). I can play music from iOS devices if I configure the Airport Express to be its own wireless network. However, if I configure the Airport Express to join my g wireless network, connecting to a netgear dg834g router, then it doesn't work. iTunes on my PC (connected to the router via wired ethernet, and then to the Airport express over wi-fi) can successfully play music. iOS devices can see the Airport Express, and if a password challenge is configured on the AIrport Express, they will prompt for a password, and apparently start to play, but no sound comes out.
No luck for me either. However my wireless router is a netgear 11g as well. Perhaps I have time over the weekend to try another brand - see what that does. I'm also thinking to dust off and start up the old packet sniffer.

I've been playing around with the IP settings and the wireless connections. So far, I've made some progress.
If I use the Airport Express (AE) to create a standalone network, I'm able to stream over airplay from my iPhone 4 to my speakers connected to my AE. However, the second I connect my Ethernet cable into the AE, the airplay connection is lost.
The second step was to change my network's IP-settings in the Airport settings application (on my Mac), from DHCP to manual/static. I used the same base as the one in my iPhone's settings (different end digits). It worked! Now I had Internet access AND could stream music over airplay from my iPhone.
The last step was to setup my Time Capsule, and extend the current network. I manually configured the IP for this unit as well. And behold, things worked. Now, everything was connected, and airplay worked.
So I disconnected all units and placed them where they should be (I had moved them to make things easier), hence they rebooted. Guess what? No airplay anymore. Check the settings - things were the same as I had left them the minute before. I'm puzzled. If someone can buil on thi approach and solve the propel, I'd be grateful. Don't have the energy to mess around more for a while...
Solved my issue. It is not the different airport express models.
I discovered that the older airport express (6.3) was on a different network "plane" than my base station, the new airport express, the iPhone and the iPad.
When I first set it up, years ago, I had the IP address manually set to 192.168.3.xx while later the other equipment added to my network was set to 192.168.1.xx. By putting the older AE 6.3 on DHCP, it has solved all the issues with Airplay.
Remarkably, playing iTunes to either AE always worked, even while on the different networks. The network settings issue was only discovered while attempting to use airplay with the iPhone & iPad.
I now can stream anything from EITHER my iPhone 4 or iPad. Works great in fact. I only wish I could figure out how to stream Pandora from my MacBook Pro to Airplay...
