Airplay from iPhone to Airport Express - no sound?
We have two of the new Mac Minis, one new Airport Express and 4 iPhones in the house - and we can use Airplay from both PC´s to the Airport Express hooked up to the stereo - works fine!
And we can se the Airplaybutton on the iPhones and the name of the Airport Express - but we don´t get any sound when we push the button and it turns blue?
We have rebooted alle the devices, made restores, reconnected - but no sound? I just don´t get it?
Tried everything - but it still isn't working on my iOS devices (iPad, iPhone4, both FW 4.2.1), streaming music from my mbpro to the older Airport Express works fine.
All devices are on the same wireless network, i have tried DHCP and fix IP adresses, factory reset on the AE...
If the firmware is all the latest on all devices and you already tried rebooting all of them and it's still not working, then the issue could be that you have too many wifi connections for you router to handle. This can be solved by plugging the AirPort Express in via Ethernet and configuring it to be wireless off.
I have to agree with Pythonrey that the problem is in the wireless router (Netgear 240 rangeMax in my case). I tried another (concurrent, dual band 11g/11a) wireless router today and at last Airplay works from my iPad.
However I'm rather certain that it is not a matter of too many connections, because 1) I disconnected everything from my old router at first do test that theory - it did not help at all 2) this would not explain why Airplay from my PC and Airport from my iPod worked just fine.
In some way Airplay from the iPad is different and has the potential to trigger undesired behaviour in some wireless routers.
Here, I solved (I'm crossing the fingers) installing a beta version of my Netgear router, model DG834G v5, given to me by the support center in Italy. This new file is "DG834Gv5-V1.6.00.34-RC1.chk".
Did a factory reset on my airport express (old one: firmware 6,3), then with my mac I set it as "new network" and "no password" required to log in. A new local network is created and now I can airplay with all my devices (after rebooting! es. of the iphone 4).
I found that the netgear 240 has a known issue in its last firmware upgrade (dated 2006), which is related to QoS packets. It can not transmit non-QoS packets to a non-QoS router. This may very well be the issue - the iPad may be transmitting QoS packets that the router is supposed to translate to non-QoS, which it won't. The older iPod and PCs send non QoS packets anyway, so no problem there. Since I don't expect that netgear is going to publish a fix after four years of silence I decided to replace the 240 by an airport express - problem solved, case closed.
We had a similar problem.
SETUP:
Router: Linksys RV042 (wired router, performing DHCP, DNS)
*Access Point*: Netgear WNDAP350
iPhones: 2x iPhone 4 iOS 4.2
*Airport Express*: 3x with latest updates set up as nodes on network (no network services enabled other than streaming)
Other: 1x Airport Extreme in similar configuration for Time Machine to network drive.
Computers: 13" MBP Unibody, 15" MBP pre-unibody, 17" MBP Unibody, 21" iMac, 24" iMac, Mac Mini (to TV) - All 10.6.5 with latest updates
All computers are able to stream to any AE device with no issue.
Problem: When iPhones were updated to 4.2, the AirPlay service ran without fail. This service stopped working a couple of days later.
One iPhone rebooted with wifi still enabled. *This resolved.*
Disabled wifi on other iPhone and rebooted. Enabled wifi again. *This also resolved.*
This looks like the short-term fix is rebooting the iPhone.
This appears to be an issue with the stability of the new feature of AirPlay (which I love) on the iPhone. I just hope that Rogue Amoeba will come out with an Airfoil for the iPhone so that I can stream to the computers too!
Hope that helps. I will post again if there is anything else to update

My setup was (is) an Airport Express and a Time Capsule, both on the same network. I couldn't use Airplay from my iPhone, but had no problem from iTunes on my Macbook.
In Airport Utilities, there's a tab called "Internet Connections", under which the setting "Connection Sharing" should be changed to "Share a public IP address". Mine was "Off" before. This made it work for me. Even if you don't run Apple's own hardware, maybe this could be of some help.
The beginning of the IP address of all units need to be the same, otherwise they don't communicate well, obviously.
Mine is still working on the iPhone 4 - but my wifes and sons 3Gs don´t work with AirPlay anymore - so I gave up. The man in the house now controls the AirPlay alone 🙂
Question:
Is your Airport E connected through WiFi or wired
I have the same issue, but going to try this suggestion. I had an AE that I purchased a few years ago and one I just bought about 2 weeks ago. Both have the most up to date firmware. Both have the same issues. Streaming from iPhone 4 cuts out after a few seconds.
My router is a AT&T provided router 802.11g
I am running 4.2.1 on iPhone 4
I can stream both video and audio fine to a new apple tv (Black) but nothing more than a few seconds to an AE.
I do have the AE pluged into a surge proector, not sure if that matters.
I joined both the AEs to my exsiting network, therefore they do not have a ethernet cable plugged in.
Try the iPhone. If it works but other devices on your network get knocked off, change back each item above but test first--1 change at a time starting with the wireless security settings first. Also, try moving the Airport further away, 1 room at a time until you get it to its final destination.
Sampling of my system devices used w/ AirPlay:
iMac i7
HP laptop w/ Windows 7
D-link DIR-655
D-link DAP-1522
