I have been following the Apple forum for a while and in summary every upgrade of the iPhone OS has been accused of breaking Wi-Fi. I guess for some it has been issues other than the iPhone, clearly some have been iPhone hardware related given the reports of device replacement by Apple. Many have reported solving their issue by reflowing the solder as documented elsewhere in this forum. You would find it helpful if you had an Apple Genius prove if your iPhone was the point of failure. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

Oh I have forgotten to mention that over the last 2 years I have upgraded an iPhone 3G iPod Touch and more recently an iPhone 4 and iPad all without issue so on that basis I would conclude that it is probably not a problem with the OS.

Adnixon, thank you for trying to help us. I have a iphone 3g, iphone 4 and a ipad. My router is a Airport Extreme. I've been upgrading my iphone 3g since it was started to sell in Brazil (version 2). I'm a Computer Engineer and fan of apple products.
I upgraded iphone 3g, iphone 4 and ipad to 4.2.1 and I had problem only with iphone 3g. I've tried everything. Reset wifi settings, iphone hard reset, restore the iphone and reset my router. And the problem persists. Some times wifi connections appears, but after seconds those connections disappears.
Only my iphone 3g has this problem. My Iphone 4 and ipad work normally with ios 4.2.1.
So I can conclude that, yes, the problem is with IOS 4.2.1, and not with my hardware (iphone 3g), my infrastructure or with me. I you have any other suggestions let me know. Regards.

I've seen this posted and I also read that for some it doesn't work but, on my 2-days old iPhone 4, wich came with iOS 4.1, when updated to 4.2.1 I started having WiFi issues, it would connect to the wireless router, was able to access the internet but, when it went to sleep/lock mode either by itself or when I pressed the button, if I "woke" up the phone the WiFi icon would still be there, the IP was still active, it was registered on the router as an active device but it wasn't able to establish an internet connection unless I shutdown wifi on the iPhone and turn it back on.
I found this solution yesterday.
I saw a post somewhere in another forum by an iPhone 4 user that simply reset the network settings on the settings->general->reset menu, the device rebooted by itself and everything was normal from then on. I tried it and it also worked for me.
Don't know if it works on 3g/3gs.

Cheers,
John

edit: wrong menu... what a n00b :-S

I have not had Wifi since 4.1 software upgrade... I was really hoping that 4.2.1 would have fixed it.
But no it hasn't.
I dropped in at the Apple Store near me and the guy there couldn't get my wifi to work or even find any to connect to.
He said in the end that it might be best at looking at upgrading to a 4...
The phone isn't even 12 months old yet.
I'm trying to book in with a genius but of course they are booked out constantly.

I hope Apple are getting the message that there is a problem our there and it needs to be fixed.

Hi Woody72.. If the phone is a 3GS less than 12 months old and it is not functioning in accordance with its published specification and without evidence of external damage in any way including water damage 'Apple have a way of checking that' then the phone in accordance with Australian consumer protection laws should be replaced under warranty. If it has to be replaced with an Apple 4 then re-joyce otherwise you may get a refurbished 3GS. Oh and by the way the suggestion that you should upgrade to a 4 indicates that the Apple Guy needs training as to their obligations. Ant..

First try Settings/General/Reset. It has also been reported in another forum that changing the iPhones IP address on the Router from Dynamic to Static has resolved some subscribers Wi-Fi issues. Also note that the Router Encryption Key is Case Sensitive and should be input absolutely error free 'No back spacing to fix an incorrect input' Good Luck Ant..

Nov 29, 2010 7:44 PM in response to adnixon

Hey Ant, Thanks for that.. Just got to book a time with the "Genuis" there is never any available. The one I've got now is my 5th one. Each one but the 2nd all had a problem of the battery going flat within an hour of a full charge. The 2nd one the microphone didn't work.. So really I think Apple need to just bite the bullet and give me an iPhone 4..

I spoke to a "Senior Manager" at Applecare for over an hour yesterday. He didn't solve my wi-fi problem with 4.2.1 and had nothing in his notes about no wi-fi. He did suggest that the software engineers should be working on it but are probably off for the long Thanksgiving weekend. I did discover to my chagrin that I didn't use upper case when entering my password. I did have to change my e-mail password with AT&T which was very simple.

Hi Woody72, I have had mine replaced once 'Cracked Case' It was a common problem eminating from where you plug in the power supply/computer.

You should note that for each replacement you do not get a 12 month warranty starting from the date of replacement. The warranty expires on the anniversary of the original purchase.

I still think that you would have a reasonable argument if the phone has been replace 5 times on the basis that of your inconvenience and the fact that the phone and its replacements was not fit for the purpose for which they were to be used i.e periods of time when you could not make or take calls due to battery life.

When dealing with suppliers I always make a point of dealing with the decision maker.
