iOS 4.2.1 tethering gone.

Hi there, I have following issue:

Internet tethering options and internet tethering itself is gone on my iPhone 3G under iOS 4.2.1.

* iPhone is NOT Jailbroken, never, ever, was.
* iPhone is officially unlocked.
* My carrier officially supports tethering (in fact I PAY for it).
* It was there in iOS 4.1
* It was there in iPhone OS 3.x days

I remember Apple did the same in iOS 4.0 days.

Question - anyone have same syndroms? I allready know it's common but I wanted to ask on international boards.

Any Advice? Custom IPCC? Downgrade? JAILBREAK?

I'd like you to also send feedback to Apple about this issue, since it's big one IMHO - Apple DID advertise iPhone with tethering feature back in the day and now its SECOND TIME they "forget" to enable this option.

The same problem. Used tethering only last week, and now it's gone again 😟

For me it's been on and off since 3.0. Apparently Apple's turning this feature on and off according to AT&T's whims...This is really frustrating. I live in Norway with an unlocked phone (legit, not jailbroken), AT&T shouldn't have a say in whether or not I can tether my phone...

S O L U T I O N !

Hello everyone who lost tethering.

1) press settings
2) press general
3) press network
4) press Cellular Data Network
5) scroll down to bottom
6) Enter APN for internet tethering. I personally use one call in Norway. Setup as follows:

APN Internet
Username "left this one blank"
Password "left this one blank"

7) reboot
8) repeat step 1-3
9) Activate Internet tethering
10) post your gratitudes 🙂

Derp. This does not work BECAUSE there is no place to enter in the APN for internet tethering. That's why we are posting here.

I concur with the previous poster. If you can enter tethering APN you have working tethering and this thread is not for you. For us in Norway with the unlocked 3G's we get this. No option whatsoever to enter any details for tethering. (OneCall which is under the Network Norway network)

I'm using my 3G with E-Plus in Germany and pay for tethering. To my great disappointment tethering has been completely removed from my 3G after installing iOS 4.2.1 yesterday. Nothing I tried did it bring back to my phone. This is absolutely annoying and the problem should be solved as soon as possible.

I think we can consider this issue as confirmed.

I guess best we can do for now (besides trying to fix it or find workaround for it) is to file feedback for Apple using link I posted in opening post. It's also good idea to inform Macworld, engaded, wired and all kinds of blogs / forums you can possibly think about so there is more fuss about the issue - the more internet will talk about it the sooner we'll have fix for it, I guess.

hi,

same problem in austria with iphone 3G and iOS 4.2.1.
the tethering option is not removed from my iphone, but tethering is does not activate when i connect it with my mac book. before i made the update to iOS 4.2.1 it worked without problems.

apple should fix this problem verry soon! i pay for tethering and i need it!
and i dont understand how such a major problem can occour.

the only reason i upgraded to 4.2.1 was the Alarm clock fix. it was my mistake i did not check if they removed tethering before upgrading.
now i am thinking to downgrade back to 4.1.

I'm having the same problem in Spain with Virtual Mobile Operator Simyo.

Everything worked fine yesterday. Today, after the update to 4.2.1, tethering is gone.

I have sent feedback through the suggested form and also emailed Steve about it.

First the alarms bug, now tethering... This is not serious.

Same problem in Belgium. Apple support contacted. They ask me to restore my iPhone but I think it should not resolve the problem. The fields (to configure tethering) are simply missing so it is a bug or... a new 3G feature.

I've already restored mine iPhone few times - it doesn't fix the issue. Next time someone contact Apple support, tell them this obvious method does not work.

Also for me, after the upgrade to 4.2.1 the tethering option is gone.

This morning I restored the IPhone and the network settings but I still have the problem.

I hope that this is a bug.

On my part, I noticed that in "general - network" share connection (in french réglage - réseau - partage de connexion) was off after the update to 4.2.1
Just had to put it back on. Everything's working fine now.
Hope this helps someone.

The problem is that I can't see anymore the option to enable/disable the tethering. It seems like the firmware has been downgraded to a version < 3.0
