iOS 4.2.1 tethering gone.

Hi there, I have following issue:

Internet tethering options and internet tethering itself is gone on my iPhone 3G under iOS 4.2.1.

* iPhone is NOT Jailbroken, never, ever, was.
* iPhone is officially unlocked.
* My carrier officially supports tethering (in fact I PAY for it).
* It was there in iOS 4.1
* It was there in iPhone OS 3.x days

I remember Apple did the same in iOS 4.0 days.

Question - anyone have same syndroms? I allready know it's common but I wanted to ask on international boards.

Any Advice? Custom IPCC? Downgrade? JAILBREAK?

I allready sent feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
I'd like you to also send feedback to Apple about this issue, since it's big one IMHO - Apple DID advertise iPhone with tethering feature back in the day and now its SECOND TIME they "forget" to enable this option.

The same problem. Used tethering only last week, and now it's gone again 😟

For me it's been on and off since 3.0. Apparently Apple's turning this feature on and off according to AT&T's whims...This is really frustrating. I live in Norway with an unlocked phone (legit, not jailbroken), AT&T shouldn't have a say in whether or not I can tether my phone...

You can add me to this issue.

My iPhone 3G is not jailbroken. It is officially without simlock (after my 2 year contract ended i chose this option) and tethering is generally allowed on my provider "bob" in Austria.

However in "Settings > General > Network >Mobile Network" the setting fields for tethering are all gone after the upgrade to 4.2.1.

I don't want to offend anyone, just add myself to the list of affected customers and hope for a solution.

Hello Everybody,

I am form Germany and my iPhone 3G, which i really love coz it still does all those wonderful things i want and need, has now the same issues after updating to (for faster 3G) 4.2.1 - No Tethering any more. No Options available. Nothing. It was an iPhone from the Deutsche Telekom which got officially unlocked after 2 Years. Nowdays i use SIMYO who strictly ALLOW Tethering and VoIP with their Data Packages. I also have a small Laptop to use it with the iPhone connected via USB.

Do i have to Jailbreak my 3G now to use Tethering? I dont want that! Really! But if Apple doesnt come over with a solution in Time, i have to ... 😟

I am using Apple Hardware now for about 10 Years switching from PC. This is the first time i really get very angry with Apple and their behaviour with us customers. Those People who pay for their Products ...

Hope there is a clean Solution pretty soon. Thanks ...

Sincerly

I just ran into this same problem after upgrading to 4.2.1, and I was able to fix it on my 3GS:

First, I tried resetting my network setting and rebooting the phone. This did nothing.

Then, I realized there was an old "profile" installed from benm.at, which I had installed a while back to try and get tethering working before it was a supported feature. Well, I removed this profile, and BINGO!... tethering option magically reappeared!

Hope this can help some of you!

Remember the days of OSX Tiger? When Apple's motto was, "It just works."? And everything really did!
Ever since Leopard I've had nothing but problems. This tethering issue Is the final straw for me. I'm keeping what Apple products I do have but switching back to Windows or even Linux. I'm done with the headaches Apple has given me. Over the last 2 years.

I want my tethering back Apple. But even if there is a fix then I can't download it because tethering isn't working.

Reagarding Mac OS X, I have to disagree. I absolutely have the feeling that thing have continuously improved alot since the original Mac OS X (yes, I've already 'used' 10.0) and also since 10.4. Tiger was still quite uncomfortable in regards to network related stuff. The handling of network access from Finder improved dramatically with 10.5 and works (at least for me) like charme since then. Also i can't remeber any real big issued for 10.5 and 10.6 (except some 'start-up'-problems during the first weeks of a major release, which are just common for my taste...)

ADD me as well this is not good APPLE middle east allow the tethering and now apple removed it, tethering is the best mobility I have in terms of connectivity in my macbook and iphone. I am using the data sim card (not for calling just only data).

Please APPLE dont make the best for other destroy by only the AT&T greed. We are affected here in the middle east.

Same problem here. I have an iPhone 3G that I bought officially unlocked in Italy (I am italian) around christmas 2008. Tethering worked fine under 3.0, 3.1.3, and 4.1. Now the option disappeared. My wife uses the iPhone with WIND in Italy (with a data package that explicitly allows tethering) and simyo in Germany (again, data tethering is allowed with this provider). Nothing I have done can restore tethering (except perhaps downgrading...). This needs to be fixed ASAP.
