Because people don't understand how the OS works, of course. Use of task killer apps can actually decrease battery life and performance because the OS is forced to keep restarting processes it needs that were killed by overzealous users.

someone mentioned that if you double click home button and click and hold and app in multitask mode, it will show that negative sign. it will get rid of multitask.

actually..no...the apps in multi mode are running multi-task which will drain battery like crazy because i tested it out. I charged the batter max and deleted apps from multi-task and the battery was high 90s. When I let the app run without deleting from multimode, the battery went down to 80. both were tested for 20 to 30 mins.
Not sure why everyone says the recently used apps aren't using memory. OP has a point. It is irritating! Ipad 2 has only 512mb over half of which is always in use by iOS. Add a few games and music app or whatever and maybe safarim with a dozen tabs with image board iOS slows down unacceptably and gets down to 6or 8 Mb free. Why in the world would an app take up memory when it's not running? Closing an app should close it and remove from memory. Why not allow close or minimize like a pc. Duh...? Ipad is slick but why not give users more control over options? Lots to love about but lots to hate too...
You realise you're replying to a 2+ year old thread?
The reason there is no task manager is because iOS is designed not to need one.
If the OS needs more free memory, it will automatically close the least recently used app(s) to free up memory. You do not need to do this yourself.
Yes, apps frozen in memory use memory, but if a new app requires more free RAM, other apps in memory will automatically be quit.
I find multitasking really useful and, what I'd really like to see is the multitasking bar on the main screen, replacing the dock.
Yeah, it's old. But still here! I like multi tasking of course, but the USER should control USER processes. Let the system do it's magic, but when I want to close an app it should die! Not linger and use memory. OK, that's Apple's famous design--we worry about it so you don't have to. Problem is that we DO. Like I said before with image boards in safari and a dozen games in inactive memory it is SLOW. Found an app names SYS-Activity that rocks! When I am down to 8MB (really) clicking the magic button inSYS-Activity returns 300MB! Speeds up like crazy. Maybe with a "new" iPad (v4) with mega juice and twice the mem of the lowly iPad2 no biggie, but that $.99 for the app was well spent. OS should let me do that though. OK, I'm done. Thanks for listening.
