I was tired of waiting for Apple to come up with a fix so I went to the Genius bar at the local Apple store, I performed a full back up and in addition I took a screen shot of all my pages and each individual folders that I have (I have a bunch of those). I then downloaded all of those to my mac's iPhoto for ease of reload just in case. They restored it and loaded a new firmware. Tested ok at the store and they told me to restore it at home as a NEW Phone. Got home & restored it from back up (was trying to save some time for me) but the issue of the "recent calls" was still there. So I restored as a new phone and I was so glad that I took out the photos, because it sure made my recreation of the pages and the folders very easy. Another note, I did look at some very important apps that I use that had a lot of data (ex; Lose it, Accounts, etc.) and all of them have a way to sync to my iphone from the desktop apps or create a separate backup file on my mac. I had to inquire from the vendors to get some of these information. I was lucky that all of them have a way to sync except for one, and that one will be coming up with a 2-way sync on their upcoming release. The restore as a NEW PHONE corrected it for me. Good luck to all of you.

@acexsace

I tried both a simple "restore from backup" (from iTunes double click from iPhone icon and then Restore) and a "full software restore" (from iTunes go to "summary" tab and then press "Restore" button).

In both cases after the long restoring process I got my iPhone with my old settings but the problem is still there.

Could you please acexsace explain what process exactly have you followed?
Did you setup a new iPhone and then manually set everything or what else?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Same problem here... not happy that APPLE is saying that there are no reported problems on this.... do they read these boards???

Tried rebooting and restoring. Cannot get into the app for the phone, which includes call log history, the phone keyboard, and direct access to voicemail.

*TO APPLE: THIS IS A REPORTED PROBLEM.... FIX IT!!!!!!*

Do YOU read these boards? These are user-to-user forums:

Your best bet is to call AppleCare. If you're out of the AppleCare period you should submit feedback here:

Yes I do know this is stated to be a user to user board, HOWEVER (note caps), these types of boards on other company sites are monitored by company techs for repetitive issues... one can only assume, that Apple does the same. And I have submitted feedback to the feedback section as well as to the Genius Bar.

Thank you for your input on my response.

There is a rather well know saying about those that assume, I am sure you know it.

There are monitors here to ensure that the children play nicely in the sandbox.
Whether Apple techs monitor the boards for issues is uncertain and unlikely.
Frankly, Apple does very little the same as other companies, so why would you expect them to run their forums like other companies?

IF this were in fact a major issue, there certainly would be more than 2 pages of postings on this matter from the millions of iPhone users world wide.

I have never experienced the problem you are having.
So that leaves it to a few possibilities:
1) a really peculiar bug that only occurs under a specific set of circumstances.
2) an issue with your data and backup.
3) user related.

Excellent point on both...

I do hold Apple to a higher standard than most other companies that I do business with, so they may not run their boards as most other companies, but at the same time, I would expect problems to be resolved more quickly, and as well, not have the 'i have never heard this before' response that others have as well..... which leads me into your second point

I am surprised that there is not more out here about this issue. It is an extremely frustrating issue with many iphone users in my circle.. and you are right, it has not affected all. But... some have contacted AppleCare, some the Genius Bar, some the feedback link on Apple ... so Apple is aware of this issue. It's false to claim that they have not received any reports of the issue.

But back on the topic at hand... this is the iPhone 4G, it's the second or third upgrade on this particular phone (I had the original iPhone before this). Hooked up as usual. Downloaded software. Phone app immediately did not work. Everything else works normally. Reboot, restored...Genius Bar can't figure it out. There are a few extra apps on this phone but not many (and have had for a while)... some music, some photos, couple of videos, don't use calendar. I have the MacBook Pro at home that I've had for a few years... upgraded both phones with this computer... nothing has changed there either.
