What I have now is an expensive smart phone that cannot even perform the basic operations that my mother's cheap Nokia do.

I'm very disappointed with the Apple customer service. I already asked their support in the past for other issues and the service level was really poor.

Coming to this forum I'm sure they DO monitor these issues and then silently take some action with new patches...

When we started this thread there was a guy who asked for the crash log of the issue. Crash logs were promptly provided. I think that guy was someone disguised from Apple. Probably they are working with bug fixing.

I'm waiting for the next release hoping have solved the bug.
There are rumors out there regarding a forthcoming iOS 4.2.2 or 4.3 version.

I'm seeing precisely this problem. It started with my upgrade to 4.2.1 for me, as well.

I also have additional symptoms to report, however, that I'd be curious to learn whether others are also seeing: after I attempt to look at my Recents, and the Mobile Phone.app crashes, my phone proceeds to get very warm and battery drains quickly (will suck down from a full charge in about 6 hours of standby).

Another additional piece of information (which I would urge that everyone consider anecdotal for the time being) is that – having visited the Apple Store and looked at the summary from my iPhones logs with the "Genius", I found reports of a number of other app crashes (Mail.app and Messages.app)...

I somehow get the feeling that is related to the contacts db.

So I accidentally got my voicemail list to appear. Someone happen to leave me a voicemail when I wasn't there to answer, and while the "voicemail" pop up was still on my screen I opened my phone.... and low and behold there was my voicemail list. Tried the same thing with the "missed call" pop up, but it didn't work. My recent call list is still not functioning, and kicks me back out to the main screen....

I am seeing alot more people writing about this issue... anxiously awaiting next upgrade so I can see the calls I've missed. Not doing much for my bragging rights on having this phone. Or on how great Apple is on taking care of their clients. It's a 'missed call' list... on a PHONE. Comon....

There's a freeware program called iExplorer that gives you access to some of the files on your iPhone. If you download it to your computer, install it, and plug in your iPhone you can access the calls database log and delete it. Then, you can reboot your phone and the recent call log should work correctly. You can get the links and watch a pretty basic tutorial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbLTjcKOcwc&list=UUsIpEkOhSzgcPgSWzNfaddg&index=1 &feature=plcp

What I did and it worked was very simple - I deleted all the current available call history (first reviewing it of course if some calls needed to be remembered). After all call history was empty tried with new calls and they appeared on the call history. Obviously the phone was not able to clear the extra one by itslef as this is happening for a first time after 1.5 year of using it. And it is 4S by the way.
