AirPlay and Airport express

Hi, since I have difficulties to include my Airport Express in my Fritzbox router wifi network, I would like to stream music from my iPad and iTunes directly to the AE and speakers. Anyone knows if this is possible? The AE now has its own network. When I connect to that network, I get the AirPlay button and can connect to it. However: no sound...

Help. I think I may be too old or just lost but I was under the impression that my ATV2 content could play wirelessly through AE. Is this true? If' it's supposed to I'm not having any luck.

can play music from itunes through AE beautifully.

Maybe I'm expecting too much. When I play a movie from netflix or apple, i was hopeful of hearing it through my stereo. NO?

I was thinking there must be something the Factory Reset was changing that could be done more easily. Here's what worked for me using AirPort Utility – under the Music tab, turn off AirTunes. Apply changes, and wait for AirPort Express to restart. Turn AirTunes back on and and restart again. Worked perfectly.

Kainz:, it looks like there's a bug in net gear's firmware (I have posted more details in another thread) For me using a different router (tried a few which all worked) solved the problem.

Airplay worked fine from my iphone 3GS but not from my ipad. I solved the problem by enabling WMM (Wi-Fi multi-media) and Internet Access QoS on my netgear WNDR3700.

Thanks betatest. I just set my Dlink router to use "WMM (Wi-Fi multi-media)" as you suggested and everything works 🙂 Music works. YouTube audio works.

Also great to discover that Airplay audio works for the news application from the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). This app streams radio and TV and the fact that Audio works could mean that the ABC may support Airplay video streaming for ABC iView (catchup tv) in future.

Hi, the problem is solved regarding using AirPlay to Airport Express; however, only to connected stereo, not to Harmon Kardon loudspeakers. See new topic AirPlay, Airport Express and Soundsticks.

Nate's trick did the job for me, just re-plugging the AEX didn't work, switching AirTunes off & on again did it... nice find!

If anyone would like to know how to fix this, I discovered the answer.

I have no idea what IPv6 is and I care not, but apparently now, all of a sudden, Apple makes iTunes talk to Airport Express units using IPv6. However, it didnt bother to make the Airport Express units expect this first, so iTunes can see the Airport Express, but it cant talk to it.

Anyway, I found that you have to manually go into your Mac settings (scary stuff if you are a non technical person like me) and turn off IPv6.

To do this, go to "Finder > Go > Utilities > Terminal"

type

networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi (hit enter)

Then type

networksetup -setv6off Ethernet (hit enter)

and magically your iTunes will talk to your Airport Express units again.

I presume at some point we will have to undo this as technology moves on and everything uses IPv6, so when that happens go into Terminal again and type

networksetup -setv6automatic Wi-Fi (hit enter)

Then type

networksetup -setv6automatic (hit enter)
