So I went through all the 25 pages - FML.

Possible solution is turning off Find my iPhone. I did that earlier and I still see a little unusual drop in battery when the phone is in standby mode.

I am willing to do a new restore unless there is a way to resync all my text messages. That is the only thing I care about the most.

I have tried resetting and all but nothing helps. I just turned fetch off and let's see if that solves the problem. I didn't notice that fetch was on all this time and I may have assumed since it's "Manual" it wouldn't act up. Let's see if this works. My phone is charged 100% and I am off to sleep. Hopefully I won't wake up with another 20% drop overnight.

Lastly, thank you everybody for sharing your problems, trial and errors, and possible solutions.

Best,
Sagar S.

iPhone 3GS (newer model): iOS 4.2.1: All notifications, push mail etc. turned off. Brightness reduced. No multitasking or background apps running.

iPhone will not last 6 hours unplugged when not even in use:
Example set the alarm and go to bed at 11:30pm and if the iPhone is not plugged in the iPhone dies before 6:45am.

Speed of the last OS slowed the iPhone down to an unbearable crawl so this was a needed upgrade and now I have to carry around a charger 😟

It didn't work. Turned off fetch and that was my last res

When you said "Turn off fetch", you mean you turned off Push and also set fetch to "manual" only, right?
And you turned off "Find My iPhone", too?

And if you have not, try install this configuration profile from Apple :
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398
-reboot your phone (Home+Power key) after install.

Those who have battery problems should look elsewhere, not the firmware ios 4.2.1. The latest IOS actually support newer and more efficient technology as verified by Nokia

I've been getting great or better battery life than before.

I did turn off push, fetch, and find my iphone. And the battery still drained. So do I still need to install that profile?

I delayed installing 4.2.1 until 2 days ago, because the computer to which I sync was out of action, while moving house. Until now I was getting approx 2 days on standby / light use. Booom! After adding ios 4.2.1 it dropped to 4 hours, with no use. I ensured all open apps were stopped; no success. Today I did a factory reset; so far it looks bad. From full charge I lost 25% in one hour with nothing running. But the device is warm the the touch... something has the processor running, even though no apps are running. I'll keep on Googling for a solution.....

I do have the same issue. I'm not sure if it started with 4.2.1 but has not been permanent. In other times it lasted 1 or 2 days but now the issue has been here for a week. I think it has to do with the carrier because I did not change anything from a day before the issue in the iPhone 4. No new apps or change to an existing one, no parameters changed (same as other occasions). I tried turning of localization, notifications, shutting down the .me account, but same result: battery drained so fast and usage time = standby time.

I had this problem show up randomly a few weeks after 4.2.1 upgrade.

To attempt fix, I set Fetch = Off/Manual. I also synced my work email account, which I use infrequently. iPhone has been behaving well now for 18 hours.

Possibly iPhone was trying to sync contacts from this work account, which requires VPN to connect, and is now "satisfied".

If it stays normal, I will turn Fetch back on to see if problem returns.
