AirPlay on First Generation Apple TV

Does any one know if Airplay works on first generation of Apple TV? I have iPhone 4 and have just updated it to the new OS version 4.2 but can't do the Airplay to my old Apple TV. I'm hesitant to throw away my current first generation Apple TV since its still works. I will appreciate any suggestions

Also does Airplay connect to home wireless enable printer or one has to buy Airport Extreem for that to work.

Thanks All

apple is in the business of selling hardware. your needs (for new software) don't fit the business model. i have no doubt that this is a strategic decision: 1)stop making software updates to make hardware obsolete faster; 2) push new software that causes incompatibilities with old hardware (like itunes 10.2 that now cannot find my ATV1).

I do feel bad for Apple TV owners who bought the product during the final year of production as they received substantially less value then early adopters.

It happens to everyone with everything, it's just the way the business works. I bought an iPad on release day last year and now there's a new one with an A5 dual-core SOC that performs better. Oh well, mine still works as it did before, so I'll keep using it until the next new one is released next year, or perhaps the future next new one the year after that.

I think the new A5 dual-core SOC has interesting implications for the 2nd-gen A4-based Apple TV. I'm sure it's only a matter of time....

Airplay will work on the 1st gen ATV (and it's pretty cool). However, you need to spend a few bucks to make it happen, so I don't know if it's worth it. You will need aTV Flash from Firecore (www.firecore.com). No affiliation; I'm just a customer. Costs $39.95. And you'll need an app on your iOS device called RemoteHD ($7.99). So for that money you're near half way to a new Apple TV. If you already have aTV Flash, though, I would say it's worth it to buy Remote HD. I got it for cheap when they were promoting it.

There may also be other solutions about which I am unaware.

Anyway, hope this is useful.

cheers

As people have mentioned, Remote HD will emulate AirPlay on the 1st gen AppleTV. Haven't tried it myself (don't care to jailbreak my unit) but others say it works just fine.

But depending on your needs, there's another solution that's easier, cheaper and may work for you.

My need was to direct the output from subscription music services (eg Pandora, Spotify) to my first gen AppleTV - the reason being that my ATV is fully integrated into my home theater system (multiple zones around the house etc).

For me, Airfoil does this beautifully. Very easy - just load some software on your Mac/PC - and pretty inexpensive - $25 for use on up to 5 systems. I've tried it with my 1st gen ATV and it works just great.

The downside is that Airfoil is not available for IOS devices - and they specifically address this on their website as follows: "At this time, Apple's development restrictions preclude us from creating Airfoil on the iPhone OS".

(Presumably this is to prevent them competing too closely with Airplay?)

Not a problem for me personally since I run Pandora/Spotify etc from a Mac.

Hope this helps.
