AirPrint/HP ePrint Requirements Clarification regarding Network

Ever since the announcement of AirPrint I have asked many times over for clarification of it and HP's requirements.

I was repeatedly told, even on HP's board and by Apple Store employees, that my friend who _only has an iPad_ could print directly to an HP ePrinter that was on Apple's list. I made it clear that she does not have a computer or any other internet connection besides the 3G built into the iPad.

When Apple recently dropped support of shared printing, I assumed that was the final confirmation that you actually could print directly to an ePrinter. My skepticism finally went away.

However, from everything I'm reading post 4.2 release this is not the case. And after spending hours trying to get her iPad to see her C310a printer, I'm guessing everyone I asked were wrong and she does need a computer with a shared network connection.

So, my question is, is my assumption correct or could there be something else wrong?

Thanks, Tim

P.S. For anyone who is wondering, on the rare occasion she needs to connect to a computer she brings it over here to my Mac.

Is there anywhere that has instructions on how to create an ad-hoc network for a HP printer (such as the B210) and an iPad 3G? I'm want to set this up without a wireless router. My guess is that you need to turn on wifi on the printer and then find the SSID from the iPad. I would also like to know if this is possible when using a WPA or WEP so that there is some level of security or if this only works for an open network.

To create an AdHoc network on any of the Ink devices is really quite simple. First reset your Network Settings, this will remove any existing WiFi associations. Then turn on the WiFi Radio, this will create the AdHoc network. However, this does create an open network. At least for the B210, I see no way of securing this network in its menu's, but there is a way using the Web interface on the Printer. If you open up Safari on the Mac (assuming you have a Mac) click on the Bookmarks button, and select Bonjour, you will see your Printer. Connect to it, select the Network tab then Advanced under 802.11. The only option for AdHoc is WEP, but its better (although not much better) then nothing.

Just trying to help.

I tried this process, and here is what I found out.

First, I have an hp D110a. After some doing, it was connected to the iPad and I could use the iPad browser to get to the printer status page. I could then print a test page via the printer using the "Print a test page" function on the printer web interface.

I then tried to print from various applications from the iPad (even the "Print a test page" from the browser) and I get "No Printer Found".

So basically, I'm pretty sure that I can connect to the printer, not really an ad-hoc network issue. But using the iPad printer functions gives me a "No Printer Found" error.

The iPad is on the latest OS and the printer is on firmware version tul1fn1006br
fwpatch version 0.

Any ideas?

I was stuck at the same place, but I just fixed it by flipping the iphone to airplane mode and back online. I have an eMac running 10.5.8, and Airport Extreme running 7.5.2, and an HP Photosmart D110 running FW TUL1FN1006BR. I could print from the eMac using Bonjour, but my iPhone did not see this printer until I restarted wifi.

I was puzzled for a while about how to update the printer's firmware until I realized that it has to be done from the printer's little LCD console panel:

I am thankful for these discussions! I am no computer expert, and grateful for this help. All I want is to use my new iPad with my new printer over 3G network. I do not have Internet at home, hence, no wifi either. I am trying to set my printer to adhoc as discussed here. I have a photosmart d110. I'll let you know if I'm successful...

Andrew, I have a new Envy 410a, a new Belkin 750DB router, a macbook pro 2 iPhone 4's and a new iPad2. I was only able to set up the Envy on my macbook by installing manuall with the ip address of the Printer. I have the latest firmware for all the items. My iphone will see the envy printer briefly after I have unplugged the printer and the router then plug them back in. Even when it sees it and I try to print nothing happens. The envy doesn't do anything. I can print from the web, by forwarding an email to the printer's email address through ePrint. Am I going to have to buy an Airport Extreme to get it to work "out of the box"? Very frustrating as we purchased this printer from Apple to work with my daughter's iPad2.

If you don't have internet or wifi at home, there is no way for you to print. Airprint requires a wifi network. HP offers an app for its web-enabled printers so you can print from 3G (I've done this with mine and it works great). But, the printer needs internet access.

The iPad II has wiFi ability and 3G. Only dial up is available where we live. I am not finding the Photosmart D110, B210, C310, C410 or the Envy100 locally. Would there be newer models that will also work?

You can check the HP website yourself, but the list of printers in the Apple article are usually up to date and are the newest models.

You might be able to use one of the "web-enabled" printers such as the HP LaserJet CP1525. I can use HP's printing app and print over 3G to my printer, but I'm using a cable modem. Not sure if it would work with dial-up. The specs for the printer simply say it needs "an internet connection" but they don't specify what type. My guess is that it needs something that is on all the time, and that ain't dial-up.

I updated the iPad to iOS5 and printed the list of printers to shop for. I guess my question is, I understand that wiFi converts a wired signal to a radio signal to connect wireless to computers and devices. The air printer does the same thing but I guess a different frequency. do these printers allow you to print on 3G and/ or wiFi mode? I can buy a wiFi box, but I can not connect to wiFi, only dial up and 3G work here. I have considered MiFi also but would not gain much with our existing plans on iPhones and iPad. It seems like a printer could work direct with iPad within range without any Internet other than 3G. Ham Radio was so much simpler.

Thanks
