CUPS Printer Error Log

Hi,

I was checking the Logs section in System Profiler and the following log caught my attention. The log is related to CUPS which is (as I understand) the printer manager in OSX. The log looks like this on screen:

*+Note: I had to put parenthesis instead of brackets because the date would otherwise be crossed out. In other words ( )=[ ] in the report.+*

error_log:
*Description: Printer Error Log*
*Size: 681 bytes*
*Location: /var/log/cups/error_log*

*Recent Comments: W(19/Nov/2010:22:34:23-0500) No limit for Validate-Job defined in policy authenticated using Print-Job's policy.* This same error repeats 4 more times and is the only error mentioned in the report. What I would like to know is what is this error about?, Is there a way to correct this?

An additional detail is that I haven't installed any printers on this computer since I reinstalled OSX in my machine a 2 weeks ago.

Thank you for any assistance in this matter.

Looking at my cups error log I also can see this entry, which for me started over a week ago when I updated this Mac to 10.6.5. There appears to be two associated entries, the latter always referring to Kerberos.

*No limit for Validate-Job defined in policy authenticated - using Print-Job's policy*
*No limit for Validate-Job defined in policy kerberos - using Print-Job's policy*

Checking the Admin page of CUPS I can see no obvious change to CUPS 1.4.5 over the previous version 1.4.4 but I would expect there to be some sort of change to the cupsdconfig that is causing this message. Anyway, for now I can say that it is just a warning (that's the W at the beginning of the line) and does not appear to have any bearing on your ability to print, when you do get around to adding your printer back.

I also have a keberos entry, should I warn Apple about this via bug report? The first entry of this log was in the night I installed OSX 10.6.5. so this put my error log as a related one with you. I would love to see more responses from others we might have a bug over here.

Thank You, and it's great to know I am not the only one with this problem.

I suggest we wait and see more responses before submitting a bug report.

I was involved with the 10.6.5 seed testing and I cannot remember seeing this entry in the cups error log with some of the builds. Still there was a lot of builds before .5 was released so I would have to check the logs on my test Mac to be sure of this.

Like I said it is just a warning so lets just wait and see if others chip in and what they have to say. Maybe someone can explain this message in detail. Looking through the admin pages in CUPS I can find no reference to the message we are getting...

Ok, let's wait for the replies then, but please do a post as soon you see your test Mac log.

I have also posted a new thread in the Using Snow Leopard forum in order to catch more responses.

Thank You.

I just found two entries in my error_log. It seems tied to when I turned on printer sharing and another machine running 10.6.x used my printer via printer sharing.

I don't have a way to double check this right now as there is only one OS X10.6.x machine available to me at the present time.

Can anyone else associate these warning messages with printer sharing?

Are those entries recent? In my case these entries appeared after I installed OSX 10.6.5. Also, do the entries have the same message as posted above?

My entries were from Thursday. I was running OS X 10.6.5. The machine that used my printer was running OS X 10.6.3.

But you have no entries before installing OSX 10.6.5, right?

I just checked if I had printer sharing enabled. I usually don't on my MBP but I know that when I add a printer to check something on this forum the newly created printer will be shared, even though printer sharing is disabled. Anyway, no shared printer for me so it seems that this is not related to sharing.

Checking my test Mac I have build 10H574 which was the release build of 10.6.5 and it also has the log entries. I'm going to try one of the older builds to see if this symptom is also present.

With regards to your Print & Fax pane having no printer listed, this would be normal for a Mac that has not had a printer physically connected to it (whereby the Mac will often automatically add the printer) or if you have not manually created a printer queue.

Ok, I saw a tutorial in how to add a printer in OSX and the empty Print and Fax pane is empty as in my computer.

Now, since your test Mac has an identical error log, it supports my theory of the 10.6.5 update being the culprit, however is to early to call this out, but please, do your testing on with the OSX builds and post back with your results.

Thank You.

Just installed build 10H531 and the entries are not appearing in the cups error log. At this stage I have created one network printer queue using the Generic Postscript PPD. Will leave it for a couple of hours to see if the references appear and if not I will enable printer sharing to see if that starts the entries.
