CUPS Printer Error Log

Hi,

I was checking the Logs section in System Profiler and the following log caught my attention. The log is related to CUPS which is (as I understand) the printer manager in OSX. The log looks like this on screen:

*+Note: I had to put parenthesis instead of brackets because the date would otherwise be crossed out. In other words ( )=[ ] in the report.+*

error_log:
*Description: Printer Error Log*
*Size: 681 bytes*
*Location: /var/log/cups/error_log*

*Recent Comments: W(19/Nov/2010:22:34:23-0500) No limit for Validate-Job defined in policy authenticated using Print-Job's policy.* This same error repeats 4 more times and is the only error mentioned in the report. What I would like to know is what is this error about?, Is there a way to correct this?

An additional detail is that I haven't installed any printers on this computer since I reinstalled OSX in my machine a 2 weeks ago.

Thank you for any assistance in this matter.

Your entries in the cups access log confirm the reset of the cups configuration daemon so that is a good outcome.

My cups error log has no mention of the validation warning message since the reset so I would expect yours to be the same.

So I would agree that you could safely mark this as solved.

After using OSX for 3 days during this week and the absence of the error log updating, I will mark the post as solve as I promised. Thank You, for your assistance PAHU with this issue you were very diligent and helpful.

Again, thank you!

P.S. At my local Apple Store almost all Macs have the CUPS error logs and are still adding entries, almost all of them had been entering the error logs after the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update, so this proves my theory after all! 😀

PAHU,

Do you know if the latest OSX 10.6.6 update has changed the CUPS printing system so that the error logs might be back?. I haven't updated to OSX 10.6.6 yet but I just wanted to know if it has caused any more error logs with CUPS printing system.

I have to say that the fix for the CUPS that you provided has worked like a charm, since reset the error logs haven't been displayed.

Thank You for your assistance!

The CUPS version in 10.6.6 was bumped to 1.4.6. I am not certain if that means they tried fixing the cause of the error_log messages. My guess is that they included the newer version of CUPS to remedy the PostScript landscape printing problem.

To answer your question, CUPS 1.4.6 is generating error logs (Part of 10.6.6) in my case but the reset method explained earlier in this post worked again.

Hope this helps!
