Ipad ram memory question

Hi there,

My ipad, and so is everybody elses, is said to have 256 mb of ram memory. Now I downloaded the app Pad info, which shows me how many of my memory is wired, active, inactive and free. But these four together is never 256. It Mostly is between 165 and 200. How is this explainable?

Thanks for the explanation

I also had the same issue that Roy was experiencing which is how I stumbled upon this thread and I have to say, I am very disappointed with the 'attitude/tone' of some community members. I am a new ipad user and while browsing with Atomic web browser, I would often receive "Low Memory Warning"(s) . In an effort to understand iPad memory usage, I also installed a few memory/system Apps and also found that the amount of used / unused memory did not add up. eg. Memory used 98mb Free memory 6mb! So, there does seem to be some 'missing memory' that is not being reported by the Apps. I know that my memory isn't really 'missing' and I am not saying I have a memory problem. I was looking for a free App that would show me the memory used by each process whch I could use for researching iPad 'memory usage' issue and then delete and forget, not constantly check.

I thought I would find the answer here in Apple communities...

I just wanted to let you know I found a really a good app for $.99 that shows you all the memory. I also think it is very intersting to know where all the memory goes, that is what drives innovation and the curiosity to discover we things. Plus I also was tryin to figure er out if there was a way to make pages not have a slit keyboard lag. I was trying to see if something was running in the background and using up all the memory. but the app process killer does appear to add up to 256 Nb if you are interested. It also gives you the option to kill everything. I noticed that their are two processes that appear to run constantly. They are

Music~iPad

MobileMail

Perhaps that is where your missing memory is going. I find it interesting to ow what is going on under the hood.

Roy, those accusing the app of being wrong are wrong. The memory numbers reported by the app are what iOS reports to the app; all such apps report the same kind of info. Some call the missing memory "other" and Apple doesn't say what this "category" holds. Graphics frame buffers are commonly suspected, e.g., the last screen shown by each inactive app, and each iPhone 4S screen takes 2.4MB, but that doesn't come anywhere close to accounting for all the "other" memory. I don't have a clue what does.
